I don't know that much about the model history of the Protege, but I've been seeing proteges with a black grill with a silver stripe along the top of it (On the P5, it is painted black). This grill also has a SMALL mazda symbol in the silver stripe, and does not have the HUGE mazda symbol in the middle of it.

Anyway, my question is, ... what year/model protege has the grill with the silver stripe, and would it fit on my P5?

 

You're looking at the 99-00 Protege front end. They redesigned the front fascia for 01+ and now only the DX and LX models get the chrome grille. It is not a direct fit though because the grille is slightly different shaped.

IMO, the 99-00 Pro's had a nicer looking front end that matched the rest of the car's lines. The 01+ models look too rounded in the front to match the chiseled shape of the rest of the body...

 

here in ozzy only the 1.6ers were lucky enough to get the top bit colour matched eg mine is black...im not a big fan of the chrome bit.

 

I was not a fan of the chrome either and that is why I took it out and put in a custom wire mesh one with a bigger mazda symbol in the middle.
