Protege5--Remove head unit help
We cannot figure out how to get the stock head unit out.
I have been to the site posted here with the great pics of how to get the job done, but what do you have to do to those four holes to release the receiver? We have been jamming bent coat hangers in there all day, but I guess there must be a bit of trick to it.
Please help!
Thanks,
David

I didn't have the handy pic site to help me when I did mine. I ended up poping off the whole silver looking piece. Then you can get your hands down in there and push the metal tabs on teh side of the radio in and pull the stupid hunk out.
The key to teh whole thing is to push teh metal "spring tab things"(there has to be a real name ffor them) in.
Try more with the coat hanger or a small but stiff rod or something.

when using a coat hanger/metal rod/etc to get the head unit out you need to have little rods in all of the openings at the same time, just pushing the rod in to release the clip and then moving on will not do the trick.

OK, so all I have to do is push rods into all four holes at the same time?
How far in?
I can't seem to feel anything in there. I was expecting to feel some kind of resistance. I wish I could picture how the clips relate to the holes. It's not a matter of having to get in at some kind of angle or anything like that?
Thanks,
David

I'm really not sure how far in, the comment about all four at the same time is just from when I have done this with other units. Sorry I can not be of more help. I am going to be pulling mine out of there as well, but am waiting to get all the parts before I begin the project.

removing the radio...
Actually you need 8 rods, not 4. bend 4 u-shaped rods to go into the holes. it is hard to explain when not looking at it.
there are 4 holes on each side of the radio (1 in each corner and 2 close together on each side in the middle.)
hope this helps?

Removing Head Unit
OK, since my earlier post, here is what I've learned:
First, there is a special tool designed to remove the head unit. With two of those tools, pulling it out is easy. The tools have prongs that go into 2 or 3 of the holes on each side. Obviously, though, you don't have the tool. Here is all I can tell you:
Looking at the unit with the little side mouldings pulled off, you see 4 openings on each side. Ignore the top opening; you are interested in the bottom 3 (two round "holes" and an elongated "slot" on each side).
On each side of the unit is a large stiff springloaded clip that is pressing outward (away from the unit) to hold the unit in place. Those clips need to be pressed toward the unit to release it. At each of the openings, the clip has an angled "pressure point", approximately 1/2" behind the face of the unit. What you want to do is press those pressure points in toward the center of tue unit. It appears you must do both sides simultaneously. You need at least 4 stiff objects pressing in, I think to get the thing to release (I would think small screwdrivers would work). Remember the pressure point you are pressing against is about 1/2" in. I would suggest having two people, each working on one side of the unit at the same time. The motion would be pressing "in" (toward the front of the car) and applying pressure "inwards" (towards the centerline of the head unit).
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all you advice guys...I got the darn thing out...I had to crawl under the dash to see what exactly was holding on for dear life behind there....
As for the BEST harness...it is cake...all the wires matched perfectly with my new deck and it just plugged right in to the factory clip.
