Rust proofing - please don't flame me! :|
I just want to know if you guys (particular fellow canEHdians) rust proofed your cars? The amount of salt and sand they put on the roads up here in the winter is crazy! If you did rust proof, did you go the oil based way or the "wax" type? I heard that it helps with sound dampening too. Any truth to that? I can get a rust proofing package (black wax stuff) with a 10 year gaurentee for about 450 CDN.

With most new cars, it shouldn't be required, as there is galvanized steel used for the panels. I actually cant' remember if I got the dealer rust proofing for mine or not now. I'd have to look at my records. I have a 15 year old VW that had rust proofing (the waxy kind), and it has only one surface rust spot about in a spot where the paint gets stripped away and dirt collects (no rust underneath though).
If you keep a new car clean (wash it once a week in the winter time, even if it is crappy and salty out), you should have many years rust free. Of course, the rust proofing won't hurt things, but it is probably debatable how necessary it is.
Maybe ask the dealer or service department (or even PM theMAN) about what panels are galvanized on your P5, and whether it is one sided galvanized or both sides, and base your decision on whether the galvanized stuff (which won't rust) is in all the places which tend to be problematic in your part of the country. I have seen cars from out east where it snows more and more salt is used, and there do seem to be different areas that rust compared to out here where there is salt on the roads, but usually not a lot of snowfall.
How's that for a non-answer
Dale.

Try looking into a rust module. It's a small device that sends a negative ion charge throughout your vehicles body repelling rust. You should be able to find it at the dealer and it's about $800-900 and is guarantteed for life. If you switch to another car, you can have it removed and installed in the new car for about 70 bucks labour.

I got my car done at Krown. It's an oil based product and the guy I go to puts lots of product one which I like. They have a new vehicle warranty thing too that covers your car for life as long as its recoated every year. I think I got it done for 90 cash. My dads got his 92 car done since brand new and the underside is in amazing shape.

i havent done any rustproofing yet. i'm planning to just before winter comes again.
i went to rustcheck with my old protege and they made a mess.
they put the greasy stuff all over....including some on my steering wheel and pedals. i had to stop the car on my way home and wipe the brake pedal clean because my foot was slipping off .
im sure rustproofing helps in the long run.
i'll probably try krown next time. i hear they're good.
my dealership is offering me a thick undercoating for $800 but that's too expensive.
has anybody tried krown ?

ToloP5, the theory behind the rust inhibitor seems sound. I've seen car programs on tv feature this type of product and so far the concensus is that they do in fact work. I know, I was a little sceptical of this when my dealer first told me about it but I did some research into it before I bought the module.
