shifter question

hi everyone, i took off the center console of my car today thinking i could shorten the shifter, i knew there was an extender on it and i figured it was just screwed on or there was some kind of a screw holding it there, well i was wrong, it almost feels like it's glued on with a rubbery kind of glue or something, has anyone ever taken it off and if so what's underneath? is there threads on the shaft before the extender or just a shaft

Ibanez, yes its been done.....just don't think you are getting a short THROW shifter by doing this...as you aren't....

you are correct in the evaluation of how its held on....there is a rubber insert that is vulcanized of sorts from one shaft to the other...its in fact a vibration dampener.....

NO there are NO THREADS under it.....IF you manage to remove the extension you will have to use a die and thread the shaft....and IF you remove the extension.....its not going to go back on like it was if you change your mind.....

in order to get it off....you will need to take a torch to it and get the shifter hot enough to partially melt the rubber insert and twist of the exntension with something like vicegrips.....be very careful if you do this....using a flame inside your car can cause much damage if your not careful....fire is a bad thing when you start to burn things you didn't plan on burning.

Do yourself a favor.....buy a REAL short throw shifter...you will be much happier with the end result.
