Well, they list SEVERAL 6x8 speakers that are EZ fit for the front doors, but only list 3 6x9 speakers for the 02 Protege for the rear deck. I was wondering if anybody has installed 6x8 or 6x9 speakers OTHER THAN what crutchfield says will fit??? I'm wondering what kind of issues I will run into if I buy 6x8 or 6x9's that are not listed for my 02 Protege on the crutchfield website. I'm not interested in amps or anything else of that nature (I don't need to blast out the windshield). I would like to keep the stock HU and just replace the factory crappy speakers with some good quality speakers that will improve the sound, etc.
me!! i put in kenwood 6x9's in the rear deck. the issue is with the tweeter mounting height. the speaker grill dips down into the deck(dumb move MAZDA!). anways when i put the deck back on after the speakers were in there, the grill touches the top of the PLASTIC part that holds the tweeter in. not the tweeter itself. this was something i chose to live with because i wanted 6x9's in there. i have found this has NOT affected the sound or the performance of the speakers.
BTW...... i will be selling these and a set of 5x7's (kenwood) that fit the front doors very shortly. they are only a couple months old. i decided to go to components wich need more power so these are coming out. they sound good though. way better than stock and work well with the stock HU.

Eric-

YOu could install your amp under the driver, or passenger seat. That way, it wouldnt be so far away.
