Stock Stereo Problems!!!
Hey guys, i got my Protege 5 not to long ago, and i noticed that the stock cd player skips a whole lot. I will replace it with an aftermarket head unit, but for the time being is there anything i can do to stop the skipping? Any kind of bump will make the whole things scratch up any cd inside.
thanks

How freaking loud is your stereo? I wonder if all that bass has knocked something loose in the head unit.
At any rate I'd go back to the dealer with it...unless of course you have to crank the subs to get it to skip.

The stereo is moderately loud, only pushing it with a mono block Mtx 6500D model amp (about 750 watts), but even with the amp and bass all the way down it skips. Partially both vibration i'm thinking, and possibley a factory defect, i will take your advice and take it back to the dealer to get it checked out. thanks

I have the factory stereo in my 2002 Pro ES, along with a 12" sub. I get no skipping at any volume. If I crank the volume up I get vibrations in the rear view mirror - you can see the mirror moving - still no skipping on the CD player.
Sounds like you have a bad unit. I'd cut down the gain on your subs when you take it back to the dealer so they don't automatically blame them for the problem. My experience is that dealers tend to take the path of least resistance. If they can blame a problem on the customer, that will be their first try.
Be polite but persistent. A car CD player should be able to play in the vechicle while incurring the normal bumps and shocks associated with normal driving. If your doesn't do that, it is not functioning properly. That's all there is to it.
