sub/amb problems

i put a system in a cavilier. used 8 guage wire for power and ground. its a us acoustics amp and infinity reference 10" sub. i have a .5 faurd cap on it. i've taken the cap off to see if the problem make a difference and it doesn't.

anyways

problem: when bass hits really hard the amp shuts off. i thought it was the amp so i took it back and got another amp and same problem. i changed speakers to a sony exploid in a different encloser and everything works fine. do you think its the sub itself shuts off the amp, or could it be the termanal on the box that is shorting the amp and high volume??? its driving me nuts b/c i can't figure it out. i don't have a voltmeter but i changed batterys and it still happens so i don't have a freakin clue other than the sub is bad. i also looped the power to the turn on lead to make sure the turn on wire wasn't loosing power causing it to shut off

it sounds to me like you did all the right troubleshooting....you took out the cap....still happenes.....you changed out the amp....still happens.....you changed out the sub...NO PROBLEM....

its got to be the sub...or at least something with it. take the original sub and try removing it from the box and hooking up some jumpers from the sub itself to the speaker wires......just use wire nuts or something, or twist the wires and tape them.....not hit it....does the amp still die? if NOT....the I would say there is a problem with the wiring IN THE BOX...search it out and correct the problem...if it STILL makes the amp die...then there is definately something wrong with that sub...

you DID check the impedence rating on the sub before you hooked it up to that amp right?

It's the wiring. The way you wired the sub. Is it dual/single 6/4/2 ohm? Make sure that's EXACTLY right. I've thought mine was right before, but looked at it really hard and found it to be wrong.

That's weird.
How many watts are you running? Does the fuse on the amp go, or the amp just shuts down? Maybe the amp is grounding out. Are you sure that it's wired up right?

i've changed the fuses and its wired correctly, its a 280 watt amp. i've pulled the sub out like sirnuke and said and ran it without a problem, but at the same time, since its in free air, it doesn't take much power to push it, in the sealed box, it requires alot more power to push it.

the amp itself goes into protect mode and shuts off, kinda like touching the pos and neg speakers cable together

The sub, and where it's at has nothing to do w/ power being drawn from the amp. The amp's either wired wrong, or bad. Or the sub's wiring chart or whatever you followed is wrong. I'd check the ground, too, but that seems like a wiring problem.

i've changed the ground twice but it could still be a possiblilty, like i said, then its hooked up to another sub, it works fine. the are only 2 wires going from the amp to the sub, pos and neg, its a single voicecoil 4ohm sub, almost impossible to hook up wrong. but i did wires it reverse to completely make sure. i've done many installs and this one just wierds me out.

IF the sub was bad, would it cause this problem

I guess it could be bad, but that shouldn't have any effect. I'd try another sub in there. That IS weird...

the amp shuts off immediatly when the bass hits. its a brand new sub so it might of just been defective. when we first installed it, it worked fine for a day, then started this problem.

i called crutchfield and the new sub is on its way so it will be here friday, so time for me to go drop off the old sub at ups. we tried a sony expoid, a rockford fosgate HE2 and a infinity kappa on it and it works perfectly fine. i think this is the first time i've had a problem with a infinity product ever.

well it WAS the sub, the new one sounds great!, really amazed for a single 10 with 280 watts going to it.
