Urgent Help! Anyone who installed rear speakers in P5

I am having trouble removing the door handle in the rear doors.

Ive been using the install guide at http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremov...otege1RSpk.htm
and the shop manual. Neither give *detailed* instructions. The guide at http://www.astolfo.com/p5/ is no longer available.

Ive installed the front speakers with no problem, but I cant seem to get the door handle off of the rear door. The guide above doesnt give any detail on how to take it off. I notice there is a little slot under the handle, and I can feel a metal clip when i put a flat head screwdriver in the slot.

How do I remove the handle? Please respond ASAP, since im in the middle of the install. Thanks in advance.

I've taken mine off quite a few times already, so now I just tend to yank on it and off it comes.

I think if you look underneath, there may be a slot in which a flathead screwdriver could be used to pry it off.

Other than that, an upward twist and pull should do the trick.

If I'm not mistaken, the rear door handles are TWO pieces - meaning you are only pulling off the front half of the handle, while the inside part stays put. Clarify: Once you get the handle off, you will still have the inside half and can use it to close the door like you normally would. Only the dimpled, outside half gets removed.

Good luck, bro.

I see that, but do i pull up, left, right, forward? It seems no matter which way I pull, it doesnt budge. I was yanking it so hard, the second piece of the handle, which is fixed on the door panel, was prying up. I stopped after this...

Any other suggestions?

I know it is on there tight usually.

I'm 75% sure that the FRONT of the handle is what pops out. The rear is not a spring clip. So try pulling up on the front of the handle - remember, only the outside half.

I do remember mine were quite tight the first time (hehe - ain't they all ).

If you still can't get it, I will go out and see if I can snap mine out and shoot some pics - but it'll take a while before I get them uploaded and all.

Lemm know - I'll keep an eye on the thread.

SHRUG!

I tried again. I feel the clip moving when i push up on it, but it 1st piece of the handle wont budge. I tried it on both doors. I know im doing something wrong, and its probably very easy to take off if I knew exactly how the clip works.

I tried searching the threads for another install guide, but it seems there isnt any (which is odd). I wish I would have taken pics of my install, it would have helped other people.

HH, if its no trouble to take pics, that would be great. Im hoping someone people are getting off of work and might see this thread. If nobody else can help me tonight, then could you take a pic? Thanks.

Aight - snapped a few pics for you:

^ Driver's side rear door

^ Grab here - front of handle

^ After a good upward/outward yank, it pops right off

^ Close up of the front spring clip. The red circle is a tab that broke on my door. Been like that since the first time I popped it off, and has no effect on the handle being reinstalled and staying put. No biggie.

You can also see the screwdriver slot, and how inserting it and pushing straight upward should release this clip at least enough to help. I just yanked mine off every time though - may have contributed to the broken tab. Ahhh - screw it. Doesn't matter, really.

^ Rear clip of the handle - this ain't what you should pull! No spring clip here.

Hope it helps.

this is from what I can recall when I did it to get at the rear speakers...

I think that the handle came appart into two pieces. First you remove the cover piece from the handle (you remove the top piece first) and the once that is off proceed onto the base.

To get the cover off the handle (be careful, I broke the passenger side one when I did this the first time and had to epoxy it back together) pull only on the front part of it. The metal clip that holds it in is at the front. The slot in the bottom lets you push up on the clip to release it with a screw driver. Once loose at the front it the slides foward as there is a catch at the back that it slips into.

I applied to much force at the back of the cover and broke the retaining plastic lip when I took one of them out.

The base then comes off with a screw driver (I think).

HH beat me to posting a pic... but here is the one of my handle (since I took it, I am posting it )

Thanks JJB for the pic, nice quality. Sir Nuke, I just deleted some messages in my PM box. I wish it would tell you ahead of time its getting full

When I get home from work today, im going to try getting the handle off.

I have a couple other questions while we are talking about speakers is what is the black plastic half dome thing on the factory speakers? Is it some sort of baffle?

Since I still have the rear speakers to change, is there a way to remove the speaker connections from the factory adapter easily? I spliced the front speakers and put connectors on, but I notice that their are standard connectors are in the factory adapter. I tried prying them out of the cut adapter from the front speaker, but its a PITA to take out. Unless there is a easy way to remove them, im just going to splice the rear speaker wires also.

Sir Nuke, where did you install your amp? Im thinking about getting a amp and setup like yours. I like my factory HU, so this is the only option for me. Do you have any pics of your amp setup?

Its not a baffle. It is a shield that is used to protect the speaker cone and voice coil from rain that drips into the doors. It is VERY important that you replace that shield. Just pry it off the stock speaker with a flat-head screwdriver and trim off the lip with a knife. Your speakers will thank you!

Just cut off the connector and splice a new connector to the stock wire...not worth the trouble as you said...

You *could* get adapters to fit the stock speaker connectors from a place like Crutchfield - similar to the wiring harnesses you get for a new deck.

But I'm guessing you don't want to wait any longer - so go ahead and snip away.

Argh!

I wish I would have known that before I installed them. Is this a safety measure in case rain gets into the door, or does rain actually get into the door? The drain holes on the bottom of the front door are plugged off, while the drains on the back door are open. Anyone else notice this?
