Why spend $400 plus on lights? I'll save my money & use it towards over items

Pretty good prices for PIAAs you got....

Well...spend $400 on an HID kit and it will last you a life time. Real HID will never burn out because it does not have filaments like bulbs. Also...most HID kits on the market are just plug and play and rebased to fit like stock bulbs.

it might be worth while to do a read of this page (i got this link from this board a while back):

http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/info/bulbs/

I am not sure how good (i.e. factual) the info is as I have not had a chance to cross check anything, but it does seem to have some good information... at least it is a start.

The VisionPlus bulbs were made for maximum lighting performance, not that pretty 'blue' or 'white' look that a bunch of people think lights the road better. They are definitely still yellowish, but its a lot whiter than the stock bulbs.

If you care about appearance-get PIAA.
If you care about light on the road-get Phillips Vision Plus.

And they are illegal. Because of the very high intensity light output from HIDs, USDOT regulations requires that they have a self-levelling system - something that will prevent the accidental improper aiming of the lights, either through manual adjustment or simple mis-alignment. This is to prevent blinding oncoming drivers - which improperly aimed HID lamps will do more so than any high-beam, superwhite bulb on the market. The true HID systems automatically keep the lights in the proper position, even over hills and bumps in the road - the lights "float" at the proper height, so as not to blind others.

This is why HID systems can add as much as $2000 to the price of a new car, either in stock form or as an option. The $400 plug-and-play sets are the real deal on the lights, but no levelling system, and are not legal for street use. Not to mention how rude and dangerous it is to accidnetally shine those lights in an oncoming driver's eyes.

If you don't care about the legalities, go for it. But if you care about being at least a part-time courteous driver, keep the HID systems on the Lexus's where they belong. And your insurance company won' take kindly to you if your lights ever blind a driver and cause an accident. They will bang you 9 ways to Sunday if they find out about the illegal HID's - especially if they are the cause of the crash.

Just my $.02
