What Size Speakers Do Protege's Accomodate - 6 1/2" All Around?

I called a buddy of mine who does amazing work in car audio and alarm installations. He has done all my previous installations up till now. I had him inquire about what size speakers the Protege 2002 accomodates and he says from 2000 up till now, the Protege Sedan model allows for 6 1/2" speakers in the front and back.

I was surprised. I thought 6/9" speakers would fit in the back. Was he misinformed? Please let me know ASAP!!!! Thanks so much!

Just spoke with a rep at Aspen Sound and they all said the new pros use 5 X 7's front and rear. I thought they were round on the rear so I'm going out to check again.

Something just doesn't jive here... I can't imagine the rears being 5x7... no way. I think I may call a Mazda Dealership tomorrow to see what I can find out.

Does it matter that I'm in Canada? I've heard rumours that the Canadian Protege Sedans have different measurements.

Where did you get these adaptor plates? are they a common thing that you can get anywhere or special order?

This has been discussed in the past and although nothing beats checking it out for yourself, here goes:

Protege Sedan: 5x7front 6x9rear
Protege5: 5x7 in the front 6.5 in the back

The sedan has its speaker behind the seat... if you were to look in your trunk, you would see them right away.

According to Crutchfield... the Protege Sedan's take 6x8's in the front and 6x9's in the back.

If yours doesn't vary from mine, I have a 2000 DX. I put 6x9's in the back and they are a direct fit. 6x8's go in the front, as I am buying the Pioneer 3-ways made for Mazda's and fords

MixMaster,

Any chance of being able to fit 6.5" in the front? Let me know... thanks!

P.S - I think everyone in here assumes people own the P5 which obviously has different speaker sizes.

Macklum,

Does it look like 6.5" speakers could fit in the front? Please let me know.

6.5's will fit your front, but you'll need the adapter. any car audio shop can do it. i believe crutchfield has 'em as well.

The opening is the Ford/Mazda 6x8/5x7 opening, and there's an adapter that will let you put a 6.5" into it--I just did this over the weekend, works great. This is on a P5, but I'm pretty sure it's the same thing in the front doors on both the recent sedans and the P5.
