BPT questions ???

BPT questions ???
Got some questions for you guys........
I recently noticed that in the FAQ it says that you can add the turbo and manifold to the N/A BP engine.....
so what will be the horsepower gain ??
also....what is the horsepower of the BPT engine........I know that it's 180, but that's with the turbo right ???
Do you have to have a front mount intercooler once you install the turbo or is it only needed if you want the car to handle higher boost.......??
another thing..........I have been told that a turbo usually needs rebuilt by 60,000 miles..........personally I think that it should last much longer, but I am asking the question because I am not sure........
feedback will be appreciated..........
thanks in advance,

i've been thinkin about turbo as well...need to talk to Braden about possibilities...
'course i don't have money for it right now, but need to figure out what direction i want to go: NAor FI - our engines were made for FI...
anyways, you can get the the turbo intake and exhaust manifolds from corksport.

I am running my BPT with an upgraded turbocharger, intercooler,intake,2.5 inch exhaust, hks F-Con and 465CC injectors. My car is running very rich and needs to be tuned but it still makes 237 horsepower at the wheels running 12 psi. These motors are very robust and I beleive I will see 300 wheel horsepower without upgrading the internals. Its a pity Mazda does not continue tooffer this motor here in the MP3, perhaps as a 2.0 liter BP turbo.

thanks.....that makes more sense now.........
what about the front mount intercooler......do they make them for our Proteges, or do you just buy any intercooler and have custom piping done........???
so what would be the estimated horsepower of a BP motor running 5 psi ??

your best bet for a FMIC is to find a Chrysler Starion in a salvage yard and yank it's FMIC. They are often on ebay as well. The piping will have to be custom. The factory IC is a small side mount, but may be good for starters....but the Starion FMIC can be had as low as $45.
estimated HP on a turbo'd NA BP @ 5psi would be around 150-160 at the wheels with gobs of torque.
Some EGT turbo guys have gotten 220HP on the stock ECU with around 10-12psi. (not sure if thats fly or wheel power)

isn't the car you're talking about a Mitsubishi : STARION/CONQUEST and not a Chrysler ?

I have to agree about the tranny as well. I am looking into getting stronger axels and cv's from driveshaftshop.com and using a Quaife LSD. The tranny may have to be treated also to withstand the higher horsepower levels I plan to make with the Autronic and 55oCC injectors. I will probably stop my power quest at around 300 wheel horsepower as the car is almost impossible to keep in a staight line under boost as it is. I look like a WRC rally driver sawing at the steering wheel just trying to go in a straight line when the power hits the front wheels. The stock BP motor as found in the Protege and Miata has proven it can withstand over 350 wheel horsepower without stronger internals. I am sure the BPT I have can go a little higher, but I will build my motor if I am looking for over 350 wheel horsepower just to be safe.

I am not sure about my CV joints and axels as they are already making a lot of noise again. I just had the CV's replaced 2 months ago, so I am thinking the power I am making is overpowering the CV's and axels. A sfor the transfer case that may be a good idea if I am going silly with power, but I think the stock gears and case should hold up to an occassional track day, or strip action. I should be putting in a new tranny in 2 weeks or so, and then redoing my intercooler and radiator set up. My engine management system and bigger injectors should get me to 300 wheel horsepower at around 15 psi. I will post numbers and dyno sheet once I get the car back together.

The 180 number came from the GTX.......that is how much power it has stock. They run about 7-8 psi stock, so just think of it that way.

The GT-R produces 185 hp (erope) and 210 hp (asia)
The BPD-engine from the GT-R uses a MUCH larger turbocharger, which makes it only a little faster than the gtx from 0-60, since it suffers from longer spool-up time, but when you change the highly restrictive exhaust-system, it will be much faster. The turbocharger on the GT-R is the same that they use on some rallycars, where it produces 350-400 hp. A guy in Sweden got 475 hp out from his GTR-engine with stock turbo.
The GT-R engine is awesome, the only problem is the gearbox, which tends to break when you go past the 250-hk mark.
I strongly advice you to check out the two links on the bottom of my sig, you`ll find a lot of info on the GT-R and GT-X. If you click on the "brochure"-link on the Mazdafun-page you`ll find the complete history of the GT-R and everything you want to know about the BPD-engine.

I called Corksport today about the reprogramming of the lx ecu and ben said that it would be better if i ran a apex piggy back system with my ecu it would run around $350 for the deal thing from apex. what do you think Groharlem? is their any other alternatives.
