Note to people who think they heard somehting:
Dont post it unless you have a definite answer, and if some moron claims he spoke with somone dont belive him, do like I did and send an email, post the email and have your question answered.
Flavor Flave said once "Dont belive the HYPE !" and thats words to live by.

I bet it's worth more than YOUR ENTIRE CAR!

The supercharged Protege you saw belongs to Wings West and was a "one-off" system put together by Area 51, the same shop that built a supercharged Sentra SE-R Spec V that got everybody excited over there.
If you want to go through the trouble of doing it, go ahead. Alot of it will have to be custom built, but I would start with a phone call to Area 51 and go from there.
If Jackson Racing won't make a kit, I suggest contracting Kenne-Bell who just came out with a new twin-screw kit for the Miata. With some minor rework, it could fit the Protege I would think.

if Area51's willing to talk to you about it, ask them what supercharger they started from, because I'm sure its a retrofit from another super, probably from a civic or a car of comparable manifold design. ask them what they had to change and if they're really nice, what the demensions before and after were on the inlets and bolt placements.
Designing a supercharger from scratch is 'near' impossible without a million dollars in machining and prototyping equipment, but, they just might have that.
...a turbo would be more practical, especially considering you can just take a deep look at the mazdaspeed protege's design and copy it, albeit easier said than done.

Jackson racing e-mailed me and said that there is not a big enough market to bother making a supercharger kit for the protege.
The Area 51 one was a Vortech. Vortech's are oil fed just like a turbo and require little or no maintenance unlike the eaton that Jackson racing uses.
Eatons require overhaul after 60000 miles.
Paxtons wear out their conical plates where the ***** drive.
Powerdynes require internal belt replacements after awhile.
Whipples require overhaul just like eatons.
Vortech has a low end version that you can buy for less than $1800 USD. But you will have to fab the mounts, belt tensioners, piping and install a blow off to control boost.
The basic version has straight cut gears and will give you that blower whine, the other is silent and cost 200 more.
Anyone who has access to a machine shop can custom install their own.

A BOV on a supercharger? Nope... Think about it: If you jump off the gas, the engine will slow down, in turn the supercharger will slow down with it, hence not needing a BOV. On a turbo, the turbo will continue to spin at maximum RPM for awhile after you let off the gas, and as such a BOV is required to relieve pressure. Never on a supercharged car.
