I agree, this belongs here in the FI section, since it is a question about turbo upgrades. BTW...If I understand your 1st post correctly, you traded your MSP to get a P5? If that is the case, then I highly recommend the HiBoost Turbo system. My friend Victor (Pirana) has it, and consitantly puts the smack down on me with 240 WHP on a P5! The hiboost kit looks nice, however It's about $1600 more than the Essentialspeed stage 1 kit. I'm trying to stay with something a little smaller that will have less impact on my exsisting "engine/transmission" (hence the catagory of my initial post). I want something that works well with the stock features of the car, but provides a good boost in power. From an email I got the this morning from Essential speed, their stage 1 kit ($2400usd) makes about 160-180whp. This is without a FMIC and only running 4-5psi. If the whp rating on a stock P5 5spd is about 96, then I consider 160whp a good jump in power! Cost is big issue also. I was very impressed to see their turbo kit so cheap. The hi-boost kit looks great however it's just a bit out of my price range. Also, on a side note, I just found me a pair of mazdaspeed cams for my car. they will be slipped in without the wifes knowledge! Should make for a fun project!

ten hours of labor at whatever their shop rate is....$100cf/hr seems pretty fair.

I guess its more than I thought. Maybe for the stage 2 because they need to do a lot more work. I thought it would only take 8 hrs but I guess it takes more. I would suggest taking it to them to have it installed that way if there were to be any problems at all with product or install there is no one else to blame. I only say this because I know a few people who have taken there cars to shops with other kits and had the shop say it doens't fit then they have to get a hold of the manufacturer or alter the kit to make it fit. This adds to the down time. Plus ES does some really good work so you know the install will be good.

you want a real turbo for your car?

call up the guys at www.spool-turbo.com
they offer a four stage turbo setup. you can start off with their stage two which uses the t3/t4 (bigger than the mazdaspeed kit) and upgrade to the stage 3 ecu and injectors. they claim i think it said something like 20+ psi and 350+ horse power or go stage 4 for something like 500hp at the crank and 450 whp. and amazingly enough they also offer a 5 year warranty on the kits. i am currently working on reinforcing the motor and the chassis, for my near future investment with these guys.

I believe if you do your internals and a good engine build up you could make decent power but most people aren't willing to pull the engine just yet.

True, I was halfway through my engine build-up when I decided it just wasn't worth it. I would buy a sharp P5 and slap on a small low-boost non-intercooled turbo kit and just have some extra grunt around town. Also, I believe the Essential speed kit can be upgraded with an intercooler and higherboost down the road if that becomes something I'm interested in. Internals are not cheap nor fast. However they are worth their weight in gold if you plan on driving hard day in and day out.

Yeah essential speed has a few differnt kits starting from low boost non intercooled to a large front mount and I believe they will have their full race kit available soon. You caan just upgrade along the way as money allows and as you catch the boost bug

I'm going to start another thread, but I'll post here first kinda like a before and after...

My car is stock 03.5 P5 with 5-spd.

10.65s @69mph in the 1/8th mile.

It ran 10.75's pretty consistantly, but the 10.65 was my fastest. Is this pretty much what you guys are getting?? Also, what do you htink the difference will be with just the essentialspeed stage 1 kit? It's supposedly an extra 70whp.

And that is very true!!!

I was boosting 5psi, got tired of the lack of power. Upped to 7psi, now that was fun, but...needed a bit more and now im boosting 7psi but reaching 9psi on high rpms

With 7psi Ive done 14.9 @94.7 with 2.4 on the 60ft and 9.7 on the 1/8

I think Jack @ iON performance may be working on a turbo kit for the P5. Otherwise I think the Flyin' Protege kit is a good way to go.
