Just to let you know.
There have been at least three people that have bought production SRT4's from the dealer and dynod over 220 WHP bone stock.

The pre-production rumor is JUST a rumor.
With the reliability issue: I've read enough MSPs with problems already. Maybe. Mazda will take care of it in the 2003.5 models.
Also, Mazda has a 4yr warranty. Dodge has a 7yr warranty. They must have add more faith in their car than Mazda.

In any case, the engine that is turboed in the Neon, is it the same one that has been used in it the past few years???

Tough call on the SRT-4 HP numbers, guys. If you check the Dodge/Chrysler website, they have info on the SRT line-up. According to Dodge, the SRT-4 has 205HP at 5400rpm and 220lb-ft. of torque at 2000-4800rpm. So, why the low numbers now? And are also quoting 0-60 times of 5.9 seconds. Just my 2 cents. Fast car, but it's still a Neon. Just like the new Tiburon...nice looking...nice options...fast at times...but it's still a Hyundai. Ciao...

Like I said before, it's underrated.
So, my car is just a Protege. Just like a Corvette is just a corvette, or a Viper is just a Viper by Chrysler.
I don't see your point.

Dodge's basic warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles.
The 7/70,000 warranty covers powertrain only, and you must pay a deductible on powertrain work. Some frickin deal.

at any rate, someone will always have more horsepower. if you buy the SRT today, you'll be kicking yourself if a 230whp Suzuki Aerio comes out next year. That is, if you solely base your car purchases on horsepower alone.
I fail to see RHAGEL's claim that the MSP is "two steps behind".

The SRT-4 doesn't even come to Canada so for those of us North of the border, it's an easy choice

All those early Neons were ringers. Chrysler is infamous for providing early production cars (and those for the press fleet) that are tweaked. I talked with a friend who works for an independent test firm (the company putting on the Mazda6 thing), and he said that the SRT-4s in the early test fleet were not representative of what the public would be buying (as evidenced by the SCC dyno numbers exceeding the factory specs...at the wheels).
And those dyno charts pretty much blows your theory outta the water.
His point is that Dodge as well as Hyundai will always be known for making low quality cars.
BTW Hyundai was second after Toyota, with only 11 problems per 100 vehicles. Crap eh?

And again, the Neon's numbers are very under-rated.

Chrysler has pretty much redesign it for more boost and durability for the Neon however.
Neon tuners have said that the current engine is good for at least 350hp on the stock internals, it's built for boost.
And lastly:
The SRT-4 doesn't even come to Canada so for those of us North of the border, it's an easy choice

Well thank ya Mr. DDakRT for clearing up the mistakes.
Well in my eyes, the SRT-4 is a better deal. And of course to others, its not. But these types of arguments are expected to happen. If they didn't, everyone will be pretty much driving the same car. Cars appeal to ppl for different reasons. The SRT-4 just appealed to me a lot more than the MSP.

if straight line performance mattered so much for you horsepower gung-ho freaks, then you all should get a cheap RWD car with a V8... choices? let's see... mustang, camaro, firebird, trans am.... hmmm
yeah.. so the SRT is better in what way? POWER
I fail to see how the MSP is "inferior" in everyway to the SRT
time has shown that people who buy proteges don't care about straight line power.... they care about the handling
I'm actually glad you want to get an SRT if you wanted to just drag race with it, because if you bought an MSP, it would have been wasted
Like I said before... the typical American's definition of "fast"-- straight line acceleration times.... the typical American's definition of "racing"-- straight line acceleration times and running around an oval countless yet mindless times
