Bremerton NT (late report)
I got the ol' Protege running just in time to head up to the Bremerton NT last weekend (after an engine swap, due to crank snout failure on my original engine). The trip was pretty uneventful, although taking US101 up is definitely not the fast way, although it's much prettier than I-5.
STS ran 1st, and my GF Julie ran in STSL in the 4th group. After being HOT (for WA) all week, it got cold leading into the weekend. Saturday morning wasn't that bad (about 65), but the fastest scratch time was posted by the one car in class with a co-driver (tire warmer), driving a Subaru. After Saturday, I was in 2nd place by about 0.3 secs, and >0.2 ahead of the 3rd place Subaru.
Julie overcame 1st run jitters to take a 0.647 lead on Saturday, but coned away her 3rd run which was 0.5 secs faster. The sun came out after the 1st group, so times were generally better in the afternoon.
To save money, I camped at the track on Saturday night, which was probably a tactical mistake. It was about 50 degrees at the start of the run group, and I was the only car in class that didn't at least drive around to put a little heat in the tires. After my first run, my tires couldn't have been much over 80 degrees. Somehow I managed to miss the cones on my first run when the car didn't turn, but it was slow. The second run was faster, but not enough. For my 3rd run, I left the car running in grid, hoping to keep a little heat in the tires. It sort of worked, but not enough to counter the two-driver Subaru.
After everyone but the Subies 2nd driver had run, I was in 1st place, but the Subie found over a second on his last run for the win (by 0.337 sec).
Julie started Sunday with slightly better conditions. The sun hadn't broken through yet, but at least it was warmer. After 1st runs, the Audi TT that had been in 2nd moved into 1st. Julie took a second off her 2nd run to move back into 1st, and the TT didn't improve. On her 3rd run, Julie played it safe, and only picked up 0.36 secs over her 2nd run. The TT would need a 53.66 to win, and when she came in with a 53.78, I signalled to Julie that she had won. Playing it safe had paid off (just barely), but if she had gone faster and coned, she would have wound up in 2nd.
Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for the Protege. 2nd in STS and 1st in STSL. Just a little fine tuning before heading off for Topeka next month.
