Your times are similar to mine. I posted over in the racing stories forum, but here are my timeslips again:
It was my very first experience with drag racing and when all the guys were attempting to 'help' me..I ran a 17.3. When I just relaxed and did my own thing, I ran a 16.8. I am thinking with a little more practice and maybe some weight reduction via removal of the back seats, I could probably get it down to 16.5-16.6 stock. Then again, I only weigh 100 lbs myself

wow, i saw motor trend test the P5 and get a 17.2 best time out of the 5 speed
but obviously they couldnt drive because urs is stock and its beating those times with pretty significant numbers
and the dude with the auto is as fast as the five speed ones...
not bad
i got a 2nd gen 1.5L
its supposed to run 17.8 with a 5 speed
my 5 speed ran 17.3
with a CAI
muffler
removed spare
and smaller diameter tires on stock rims

Thanks Pigeon......but im still disappointed that I ran a 17.1....im going back to the track sunday and I WILL run a 17.0 flat....maybe If I think about it long enough ill get a 16.9! But what can I expect i have an automatic.....i guess its not too bad, I can hang with the 5 speeds....well.....beat them I can beat both my friends 5 speed P5's.

I thought my PR5 (5-speed) would maybe pull a mid 17 run (with me driving), but I truly amazed myself with the 16.8! Plus, it is a good place to start from so that I know what kind of difference any future mods will have.
My friend with the comparably equipped stock Focus could only manage a best of 17.0, so I must have been doing something right!

FWIW a decent driver can almost always beat most of the mainstream auto mag times because they usually start the clock the moment the car starts moving, whereas an NHRA-style dragstrip starts the clock when the car clears the second stage beam, after it is already rolling. This typically makes a 0.2-0.5 second difference in the 1/4 mile time; it's also the reason why you have to launch on the last yellow light to get a perfect reaction time.
Mandatory Disclaimers:
1) Sport Compact Car uses equipment that simulates an NHRA "rollout" so they can get times that better represent what a reader can get at an NHRA strip.
2) Motor Trend applies "correction factors" to their times to make them more "realistic". In practice, this means that they liberally shave tenths off their times to make it look like they can drive better than C&D and R&T, but it also means that all their times are And no, I'm obviously not the Chris Walton who writes for M/T

for an automatic, ur doin real well....
my friend has an automatic 2002 civic, and he runs 18.1
he gives me a good run off the line
hell man, im a 5 speed and ur beating me
but then again, i only got 92 hp and its a 1.5L
no torque

im not too worried about that anyway.......i talked to a shop i go to and theres a certain piece i need for the kit and they dont sell it seperately....so im going to go ahead and buy a new NOS setup w/ the bottle for $510.....compared to $625 thats good enought for me.

its more risky running the nitrous with high compression eh...
u should just put in the pistons and forget about the nitrous
even though it wont give u as much power as the nitrous, u would have it all the time, which would be real fun

yeah....i would have the power all the time but......n2o is just more fun! It may be a little more dangerous.....but I can live with it......i wont be running the nitrous all the time....maybe once every week at the track or so. Im getting the nitrous for sure.....and im still asking around about the high comp pistons.....and if its going to be too too high to spray with them.
