Not only does a larger filter give you more filter capacity, it also gives you a bit more oil capacity, I always believe more oil is longer lasting and safer as long as it stays within the min/max lines on the dipstick.

For proper sealing of an O-ring it needs to be compressed (hence tightening the filter more than one turn once the O-ring contacts). If it's worked for you then great, everyone's hand meter is different so you might be putting it on enough. I'm an (****) engineer so I do it by the instructions.
Automotive voodoo, I guess. I personally lube with fresh motor oil, but I make a sign of the cross with a mixture of chicken blood and assembly lube on the filter at every oil change.
