The cap on my 2009 gives me grief now and then also.
Seems you have to apply pressure just the right way but I haven't figured out what it is yet.

 

I am also suffering in Mazda gas cap purgatory. I am on my FOURTH broken gas cap! This is one of the most maddening problems. Unless I carry a Channelok plier with me at all times, I can get stranded at any gas station as the cap locks up, breaks, and the stub refuses to be removed. I have the 100K mile extended warranty and was forced to pay $38 for my latest cap. I guess that I should be happy just to buy another poorly designed cap!

Consumer Reports raves about the Mazda 3, yet I suffer the outrageous gas cap problem, power steering that has failed three times, rear wheel alignment that just barely adjusts to specifications and tears up rear tires with toe-out problems, carpet that has worn a hole- all this with just 34,000 miles!

This is my first Mazda, and very well may be my last. I have had MUCH better luck with my American cars!

Hello there, I want to thank you all. I realized by your comments that this is quality or design problem. I just went to the dealer here in town in Hermosillo Mexico knowing before hand of the bulletin and they replaced it at no cost. Wonderful.

 

Had it happen to me today, drove across the street and dealer replaced it in 5 minutes for free. I find Target Mazda here in Nova Scotia to be excellent to deal with. Nar a problem with them yet.
