Mass Airflow Sensor Warranty Extension Program
Dear Mazda Dealer:
Mazda Motor Corporation is extending the warranty coverage of the Mass Airflow Sensor on
certain 1999- 2000 Protege vehicles with the 1.6L engine and Non-California Emission Control
Warranty. The extended warranty is available for 7 years from the original warranty start date or
70,000 miles, which ever occurs first. This warranty extension program is provided in the
interest of customer satisfaction.
There is a possibility that a malfunction of the Mass Airflow Sensor may cause a Check Engine/MIL
illumination and/or poor driveability. Symptoms may include a lack of power, hesitation, or unstable
idle. Failure of the Mass Airflow Sensor will not cause failure of other components. Other
components that can cause these symptoms are not covered under this extended warranty
program.
Owners of subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail in three phases. Owners will be
advised they do not need to have their vehicle inspected if it is functioning normally.
Detailed information regarding this Warranty Extension Program is provided in Attachment I.
Please make certain that the appropriate personnel in your dealership are familiar with the details of

WARRANTY EXTENSION
For certain 1999-2000 Protege vehicles with the 1.6L engine and Non-California Emission Control
Warranty, the warranty coverage for the Mass Airflow Sensor is extended. The extended warranty is
available for 7 years from the original warranty start date or 70,000 miles, which ever occurs first.
CONDITION OF CONCERN
There is a possibility that a malfunction of the Mass Airflow Sensor may cause a Check Engine/MIL
illumination and/or poor driveability. Symptoms may include a lack of power, hesitation, or unstable idle.

OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified of the warranty extension program and advised they do not
need to come in for inspection if their vehicle is functioning normally. Owners will be notified by first
class mail in three phases, according to the following schedule:

Mark, is this something that would be a problem wether or not a vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket intake system? There are NUMEROUS 1.6L owners here complaining of idling and power loss problems but like most owners they all have short intakes.

From what I have seen they are extremely sensitive to oil/dirt. I know I tend to oil my CAI a little more than t needs it. My Mazda6 set three codes in two days from the oil on the CP-E filter.
