08 Mazda3 starting question.
Hi everybody,
I welcome everyones advice, ideas or thoughts. I have an 2008 Mazda3 2.3L 5speed. Occasionally when starting the car, the tach reads 2000 rpm then drops to under a 1000, goes to about 1500, then back to idle rpm. Sometimes it might do this two or three times. Temperature doesn't seem to make any difference. Dealership has done all the test, electrical and fuel pressure, no codes were found. They had the car for about a month and a half and the dealership told me its's not hurting anything, it's OK. If all the 3's on the lot did it, I'd be OK with it, but they don't. Thanks for your input! Doug

I know when I start up my 3, it holds around 1.5k rpm for a bit, then when I put the clutch in (or wait a little bit) it drops idle to 1k, then after a little time it goes to the normal 750rpm or so idle. I just figured it was part of an accelerated warm-up idle program like my old FC had.

I think hes worried because it isnt running like a normal warm up cycle. The RPM's are going up, down, then up again. As far as Im concerned thats not normal, especially on an '08. Take it back, make them fix it (its your hard earned money you are spending on the car, and YOU are their customer), and tell them that having it any longer than a week is unacceptable. Keep us posted, and good luck.

my '08 sedan does it too... as far as i know, its the way its supposed to be. the only reason why i say that is that all of my rx7s have what is called the "accelerated warm up cycle" where the engine will stay revved to 3000 RPM until the car is placed in gear or just the clutch was pressed in.
let me know what the dealer says!
BTW, my short shifter gets here tomorrow!!! in time for mazdapaloooooooza!
