Can someone please post what the FCC ID is on the back of their key less entry remote? I bought a replacement key fob so I just want to make sure that when I go try and get it programmed that it will work.

I heard there's a procedure to program new remotes if you have the original two from your car, though I haven't looked through the procedure myself to see what is involved. In any case the dealer would be able to program a new one if you can't get it to work.

 

I found a set of procedures for the mazda 6 and tried them on my car but didn't work. So I'm having a key made and programming the remote at the same time. My car didn't come with any FOB's, just the 1 key. Thanks for the post.

 

FYI for the key the dealer will have to program it via the computer. Once you get a second key you can program in additional keys (up to 8) yourself for free.... well other than the cost of the key. I recommend getting a third key so that in the event you lose one you'll still have two and can add another one back in.

It sounds like you have an incorrect remote. From what djs said you have the same visteon number as his '07 remote, and those two years aren't cross-compatible. Mazda changed the keyless entry system in '07 so all newer remotes don't work on the '04-'06 models.

The OEM p/n for the '04-06 standard fob is BN8P675RY. If you're shopping around for another one remotes with visteon numbers 41486, 41525, and 41524 are confirmed to work on the '04-'06 model.

Here's the programming sequence.

Since you have an '06 model you also have the option to get a flip key. There are two flip keys (specifically the remote portion) which work with the 3. One is from a Mz6 sedan and the other is from the MX-5. The only real difference between them is while the MX-5 has the same three buttons as the standard 3 remote the Mz6 one has a panic button half the size and a fourth button for popping the trunk. The trunk button doesn't work on the 3, however it does make it less likely you'll hit the panic button by accident. The Mz6 flip fob also costs about $35 whereas the MX-5 one costs over $100. I'll let you do the math.

If you want to go that route the parts you need are:

flip remote GP7A675RY

Hey thanks for the info. I like the idea of a flip key a lot better so if I have to get a new fob anyway I will go that route. Specifically the Mz6 remote as I like $35 a lot better.

I've had a local key guy of mine do programming in the past for electronic keys, would he be able to do this as well? Obviously I need to get the key cut but you mentioned that I would need to go to the dealer for the 2nd key. I assume this is some sort of safety / theft deal.

I assume the best (cheapest) avenue for those part numbers is ebay correct? Such as this:

It's possible a key maker would have access to something allowing him to program the keys. I've heard of people getting a key cloned before, so while you would end up with more keys the car would see it as only a single key. Given that you wouldn't be able to add more keys yourself using the regular method, however you could just add another cloned key so it doesn't matter. Ask him and see what he can do. Most dealers charge ~$50 to add a second key as the process takes about 45 minutes.

If he can't do it any dealer should be able to do it no problem. Most of them will even cut a key for free for you. They can pull the cut off of your VIN. If you ordered new components from onlinemazdaparts Jason will cut the key for you before shipping if you ask. Then again you'd be paying ~$80.

Yes that link is what you'd be looking for. I can't confirm that's the correct one (looks right) simply because the FCC and visteon numbers on the flip remote are on the section between where the two halves come apart. I at some point broke the little tab that holds the two pieces together and occasionally the remote would pop off if you tried to pull it out of the ignition without turning it all the way. I went to the dealer for an inspection and the SM accidentally did that. I told him it wasn't a big deal and I'd take care of it. After I got my car back I found that they'd put a big glob of superglue over the part with the numbers and stuck the two pieces together to 'fix' it. It popped apart immediately and the only thing it accomplished was completely covering the numbers under the glue.

 

I got the blade key cut and programmed which works perfectly. I programmed the remote myself using the steps above but I've noticed an inconsistency at times.

For example last night when I got home I locked the car using the remote, but this morning when I went to leave the keyless entry for unlocking or locking didn't work at all. Then when I got to to work I tried the remote again and it worked for both unlocking and locking.

Has me really confused. Any thoughts?

After reading a few threads on flipkeys for the 06 M3, I'm confused on whether I will need to replace the key blade that comes with the flip key I ordered ^^.

Did the key blade that came on yours work or did you have to buy a different blade to replace it?

Yep I think that one will work just fine. The dealer I brought it too was not 100% confident that the car would take the key because of variability in manufacturing but he cut it and programmed without a hitch.

I'm happy with mine. As far as my previous issue of the key fob not responding at times: That issue was related to a poor design in the ignition switch. So if your's ever acts like the key is still in the ignition (beeping when you open the door) and your remote doesn't work then that's your issue. $60 part from the dealer + labor.

I haven't had any problem with my ignition switch thus far (knock on wood) but I'm probably gonna be more careful pulling my key out from now on lol.

 

You shouldn't have to replace the blade itself as it's uncut. If you did then you have the option of replacing that entire top portion, or just removing the metal blade itself (there's a little pop rivet holding it in) and putting a replacement blade in it.

Once you get the second key added buy a third regular key and program it in. That way if you lose one you'll have two left and can add a new 'third' key without going to the dealer.

Yup, the faulty ignition is a pretty common problem. iirc there's a little pin inside the ignition which either breaks or seizes up and makes the car think there's always a key in. Since the keyless entry doesn't work when the key's in your remotes won't work.
