Brake Dust

Has anyone found out or figured out why on all Mazda 3s 5drs and maybe all mazda 3 for that mather, why does the brake dust only form on the back two wheels then any where else? I undertand the front wheels get dust as well. Not nearly as much as the back ones. In most cars it is the other way around

I am confused

organic brake pads vs semi-metallics in the front.

organic pads suck *****. I'd replace them out ASAP with some quality semi-mettys.

Might I suggest NAPA TS7947M or AE7947M

The AE lines are a higher quality pad but cost a good bit more. For this application and seeing as how they are rears I'd suggest the cheaper TS lines.

Try using Wheel Wax...Works great...Last up to 90 days...And its very reasonable...

I complained about this upon my last oil change at the dealership, I also mentioned that they rear brakes would squeal quite loud in the mornings. They replaced the rear pads free of charge and the amount of brake dust on the rears has lessen quite a bit since then.

Usually the squeak in the morning is due to cold/condisation...Did you pay for the replacement or was it covered under warrantee?

I was told by the dealer ship that the biggest reason there is more brake dust on the back tires, because they have it set to brake more in the back then the front.

If thats true only reason I can think is so the front wheel drive won't lock up if you're braking and turning at the same time.

I don't know about you guys but I've had cars do that on me before.

Tell the dealer that their explanation is completely wrong, not to mention rather dangerous. Ask them how many cars do they know of, even previous Mazda cars, where the brake bias is more towards the rear of the car. None. Putting more stopping power to the rear brakes (rear brake bias) means that your stopping power is great diminished than the same car with front brake bias.

That does make sense. Maybe the guy at the dealer is just an idiot

Probably not...just lazy. If it's covered by warranty and isn't life threatening, the dealership doesn't really have an incentive (i.e. $$$) to do the work.

I know this is old, but the rear brakes on my wife's 2004 3 hatch seam to wear a hell of a lot faster than the fronts. At the rate they are wearing, we will have put between 4-6 set of pads on the rear before we have to change the fronts.

I have brought this up to the dealership we bought the car from & they just say that the brakes are working fine & there is nothing that needs fixed.

It looks like we have around 70-80% stopping in the rear & 20-30% in the front. I know there has to be something wrong, but the dealership just will not budge & keeps telling us there is nothing wrong. One guy told us a while ago, after the 1st set of rear pads were gone, that that's just the way the ABS works.

After 1500 miles on my 3 it didn't take much to notice the extraordinary amount of brake dust that was put out (possibly because they were new brakes), but there was twice as much on the front than back.

Wow, with my MS3, the fronts are what get really dirty from brakes, and the rears hardly at all! Check to see you are not driving with your parking brake on!!!

I can't say for others, but I know I don't drive with the e-brake on. The rear brakes just wear out a lot faster than the fronts. About 5x faster.
Hopefully the new pads I bought will last longer. I went with new rotors & Hawk HPS pads.
