I am noticing a greater accumulation of brake pad dust on my rear wheels then on the front wheels.

Does anybody else share this observation?

2004 Mazda 3 Sport GT c/w 17's & 4 wheel disc brakes

 

wow, trhats very strange...does the rear of the car drop when you hit the brakes stiffly?? If so you need to have the brakes re-proportioned.

 

i notice that too...im thinkin of goin to the dealer for a quick check up....

 

I have absolutely the same thing happening. The rear wheels are covered in dust, and the fronts are clean.

I've been meaning to find out if they used dustless pads on the fronts, etc. - I'll ask when I go in for my first oil change in the next few days.

 

anyone notice the rear brakes seem "grabby"? If so I know what the problem is.

 

How about differences in airflow? Brake dust seems to cling to everything, so it probably won't make a huge difference, but if the fronts are getting more air through the wheel (possibly for cooling them), it might help to keep it off the wheel a little more.

 

I get more brake dust on the backs then on the fronts too, way more. I can spray the fronts clean but not the backs. Maybe they're chepaer pads on the back since it's pretty small car, 4wheel discs is a bit of a overkill.

I went by my Mazda dealer and they said it was "normal". He couldn't explain why it didn't happen to the front wheels, though. Anyone find out anything else?

 

I'm going to change the back pad to a Premium, low dust pad and see if that fixes it. I think the backs are just cheap pads.

You owners with the excessive rear brake dust issue, do you also have the ABS/EBD option also? I've read that most everyone with this issue has the ABS/EBD option. Apparently the EBD applies more force to the rear during normal brake application causing the rear to produce a LOT more brake dust than the non-EBD equipped cars.

 

I don't have ABS/EBD and I still get way more dust on the back compared to the fronts.

I get a ton of dust on my rears I am thinking of changing pads also to eliminate some of the dust I dont have ABS installed either so who knows what is causing it but it is annoying as he!! having the rear wheel constantly looking dirty.

 

I too get a lot of brake dust on the rear wheels without ABS. It is probably because the rear brakes are smaller and wear out faster. For those who have ABS, I doubt there is more braking from the rear wheels. That would cause you to fishtail more easily.
