Engine won't start - suspect starter

Hello – I have a 2008 Mazda3 2.3L hatchback (auto transmission). Last week, I drove to the store and coming back to the car after about an hour leaving it parked outside, I could not start the car. I could turn on the lights and accessories, but the engine would not crank. I tried jumping the battery, but that didn’t help. Finally, I located the fuse box and took out a few of the fuses that were labelled engine/starter, then plugged them back in. That did the trick and the car started that day as well as 5 more times since then. This morning, I was again unable to start the car (same symptom as earlier). I was in a rush and didn’t have any tools, so only managed to take out the fuse labelled “glow” and put that back. That did the trick and my car started up. Can somebody tell me whether the fuses need to be replaced or something else in the starter system? I replaced the battery 3 years ago, so I don’t think that’s the problem. I’d like to narrow down the problem, so I’m not taken to the cleaners by a mechanic.
