Ford Focus blower on a 3?

Considering the 3's 2.0 and 2.3 are based loosely off the Duratech Focus engines, is there enough similarity to use the roots blowers developed for the Focus on the Mazda 3?

why would you want to do that when you could buy my supercharger for the 2.0L motor and smoke those 2.3's??

I'm going to look into how close it is on the new 3's but I know you can order the 2.0L model without ac which eliminates a lot of the work when installing the supeercharger. This would make a lot of people more interested in a 2.0L model I think.

Is the 2.0L Motor in the mazda 3 the same motor as the protege's or is it just a shorter stroked duratech?

nope, it's identical to the protege engine. The only difference is the variable valve timing and ecu mapping. That added 18hp on their motor...not shabby!!

that's pretty nifty Does it have the same tranny as well making it a protege in a slightly more elegant body? I'm just interested if they have a more efficient drivetrain in them putting more of them 148ponies to the road. Another interesting question, is the variable intake timing head attachable to the protege motor? That might make for some fun...

I really like the configuration of the duratech motors...intake in front and exhaust behind...I don't know why it would be done any other way. You get less restrictive exhaust and cooler intake temps. Don't know if the motor is very reliable, but they're going to boost it with the mazdaspeeds....so I hope so.

Mazda developed the new 2.0 and 2.3 litre engines (and others outside of the US, like the 1.6). The new duratec, the duratec 23, is loosly based on the Mazda 2.3 ( it has some different externals), and is made in Mexico. The Mazda 2.3 is made in Hiroshima, Japan. Ford is replacing all of their 4 cylinder engines with Mazda units. It is cost ineffective to totally design their own. But, again, they are not identical. Ford does some of their own stuff to the engines. The old Zetec's from Ford are gone, because they weren't very well rated. The SVT engine from the old Focus was too expensive and not very powerful.

I figured out the Mazda 3's 2.3 is the only engine of the bunch with vvt. The 3's 2.0 and Ford's 2.3 don't have it.
Sadly, we may have to resort cribbing Focus parts to go faster.

this is incorrect. The 2.0L in the new 3i DOES have vvt.

I stand corrected. I remember specificaly hearing about the 2.0L engine in the 3i before the car came out and several people were contimplating swapping heads and ecu's into the proteges for the extra 18hp.

I wonder what the difference between the fs-de and the 3i engine is then....it can't be all engine tuning. Something has to be different.

It's a global engine, so all the hard parts SHOULD be the same. Manifolds, calibration and such probably accounts for the diff in HP. The 2.0 and the 2.3 are identical, (I own both) with the difference being stroke, and the VVT mechanism. I'm studying on the specifics of it. Ford's Cosworth division has produced 300 NA HP from a 2.3 stage 3 kit. Nice looking parts.
