The base engine on the sedan will be a 148hp engine, the 5 door version of the Mazda 3 will have the 160hp engine from the Mazda 6.

From what I hear the 2.0l is standard & the 2.3l is an option,.....
To tell ya the truth,.. I'm pissed I didn't wait for the Mazda3,.. it looks nicer than my 2002 P5.

The real code name of these 2 engine is not MZR.

To clarify thing out we have to see thing like this.

MZR is the name of the new engine serie with opposite intake/exhause from Mazda. In this serie there is 3 type of engine (for right now...)

The 1.5l = ZY-VE (will not be sell in north america)
The 2.0l = LF-DE
The 2.3l = L3-VE

The compression used in this new motor is much greater than that which is used in the FS-DE (10.0:1 vs 9.1:1) Which allows the increased gas mileage and most of the power difference. Additionally the change in rod ratio (the newer engine is over square with a shorter stroke and larger bore than the old) would be more conducive to higher rpm productivity than the previous motor (better high rpm power with less low rpm power related to the dwell time of the pistons...this is compensated for by the greater compression ratio to keep low end torque though).

Notice how both the peak numbers arrive 500rpm higher than the FS-DE's peak numbers.

This is my take on how they achieved much greater hp figures out of the new engine but hey, they could be over optimistic with the 2.0L motor.

The 2.0l engine has nothing to do with Ford. The 2.3l engine IS a variant of the engine used in Ford cars for a long time (remember the 2.3l Turbo in the 80's Mustang?). It however has been seriously worked over by Mazda (thank God!!). Very interesting article here about the platform that Mazda is sharing with the Focus and Volvo S40. Read the following quote from Motor Trend: "Ford is rolling out an all-new Focus for Europe next year, which will also provide the basic underpinnings for Mazda and Volvo small-car models. Suppliers and analysts had once expected that European Focus to be brought to North America in 2005. Later, they believed it had been pushed back to 2007. Now they are finding that nothing more than minor freshenings are planned until at least 2010." The Blue Oval guys get no love until 2010!!! HA,HA, HA!!!

The Mazda 3 is featured on mazdausa.com. If you go on there, you'll see that the 2.3L uses vvt, and the 2.0L does not. The 2.0L in the mazda3 is rated at 148 hp @ 6500 rpm and 135 lbs of torque @ 4500 rpm. 4 valves per cylinder of course, but no variable-valve timing. Whereas the 2.3L on the Mazda3 is rated at 160 hp @ 6500rpm and 150 lbs of torque @ 4500rpm. it too is a DOHC, naturally, and has variable-valve timing. You can see the full specs on that site. You'll have to first go to a link then download the full specs using Adobe Acrobat reader.

Lets hope it actually has 148 horsepower and Mazda doesn't make the same mistake 3 times in a row.

Everybody knows there are lies, damn lies, and Mazda hp claims.

Still the 2.3l makes the 3 scoot even with the auto. I like it. It gets quicker with each mile as it breaks in. I am more impressed with the motor today than yesterday

Anybody have an idea what the stock wheel and tire combos weigh?

One of the reasons I did not want the hatch was the 17" wheels. The larger diameter and the extra weight are probably wasting a tenth at least in 0-60 compared to the 16" stuff.

well I worked at a Mazda dealer and the mazda3 gets worse gas miliage then the protege5.......

Also the 2.3 liter has many problems with it. It has some recalls coming for the mazda6 and the jag.

Also mazda3 drives like ****. compare to 1st, 2nd and third gen. proteges.

Are you freakin serious???

1st off >The P5 gets 25/31 man and 25/30 auto. Oh thats weird... the 3 gets 25/32 man and 24/29. Sorry your owned there.

2nd > How can the new 2.3L have many problems when its a new motor? Oooh looks like another one.

3rd > the 3 drives like ****?? I must admit the Protege line was good. In fact, they were awesome. The 3 has been said by many that is not by any means a "Protege"... Its a replacement. So it doesnt please you.. does that mean it drives like ****?

Sorry all, this just looked like a rediculous post.. i had to defend the 3. Although I do like the P5, it just needs to grow some ***** (power wise).
