3rd > the 3 drives like ****?? I must admit the Protege line was good. In fact, they were awesome. The 3 has been said by many that is not by any means a "Protege"... Its a replacement. So it doesnt please you.. does that mean it drives like ****?

Sorry all, this just looked like a rediculous post.. i had to defend the 3. Although I do like the P5, it just needs to grow some ***** (power wise).
OK, a reply to these comments:

1. The 3 does get worse gas mileage than the P5 as shown above in automatic, I'm not sure what your argument is.

2. Although a new motor for the 3, it has been around for over 1/2 a year in the 6 already and the 2.3L does have problems with it, although I hope that Mazda has fixed those problems now in the 3.

3. Although the 3 isn't as "fun" to drive as the P5, it is much more refined in every way prossible. The 3 Sport can accelerate to 60 almost 2 seconnds faster than the P5, gets 0.87g vs 0.80 in the P5. So no, the 3 doesn't drive like ****.

It however has been seriously worked over by Mazda (thank God!!). Very interesting article here about the platform that Mazda is sharing with the Focus and Volvo S40.
No! The 2.3L in the Mazda 3 is not the same as the old pinto engine. Just the size is the same. This is a Mazda engine and not a Ford engine. It was first used in the Ford Ranger/ Mazda B2300.
Yes, I know that the old Pinto engine was also used in the Ranger/B2300, but they did start to use the new engine I think three years ago.
As for the 2.3 turbo Mustang, it was called the SVO.

the Protege is hardly a midsize sedan..It is a subcompact, or the petname is "econobox"...the midsize sedan is the 6

badm3,

I know you just bought a 3 and you do not want it bashed the 2.0liter 3 gets 1 mpg better then the 2.0l protege5. Wow 1mpg. The 2.3 has worse then the 2.0l protege.

Now if you look up the mazda6 2.3 liter and look up the list of problems they are pretty long for a newer motor. I know the 2.0 liter fs motor has been out for a while and had its issues as well.
Looking back the the fs had less problems its first year.

Now on the track we had a mazda 3 2.3 and a protege 5 2.0L, The mazda3 had a little more get up but the weight of the 3 has gone up more then the protege5. So what extra ponies it has has been wasted. The car sits much higher stocked then the protege5. Cornering it reminded me of my buddies focus. Its first year and I feel Mazda needs to work some of the problems out of it before I would buy one.

Oh well

I am not really sure what you are trying to say. I have an MTX '01 Protege 2.0, and an ATX 3S 2.3 liter sedan. The 3S is not even borken in yet and it will run away and hide from the Protege. Do the math, Car and Driver did a 7.4 second 0-60 with a loaded out 3S Hatch, that is a full 2 seconds faster than the P5 they tested in 2002.

The Protege does not have higher handling limits it is just more tossable. It also torque steers much worse than the 3. If you think lots of people are having engine problems with the MZ3, then I think you should go over to the Mazda3forum.com and have a read for yourself.

About the only problem reported over there was one guy getting a cel over an airbag sensor.
