just my opinion, i'm sure others have different ideas but, in my case, i kept the factory HU and therefore dont plan on upgrading the door speakers until they start sounding like crap. i threw 2 10's in the back and for me at least, i have a nice balance of deep relativly loud bass coming from the subs with just enough volume coming out of the door panels to hear everything else without being blaring. now if your going to upgrade the HU, then by all means upgrade your door speakers because even a cheap HU will put out 50watts/channel, and the factory speakers can only handle 30-35watts. OR if you so choose and upgrade the HU but don't want to deal with your stockers, they make devices called 'speaker savers' you can install with the new HU. They installed those when i bought my MP3 player for my b3000 but i hadn't upgraded anything else yet.

Also, the speakers are the same in all the models unless you get the bose system, i beleive.

Question, perhaps off the path but,if you put in an aftermarket head unit will or can you make the steering wheel controls still stay functional?

Question Re: 'same speakers'

Along these lines I've read that the M3 HB's front door spkrs, (non Bose), are 6x8s, but no mention of the tweeters located at front lower corners of the drivers & passengers side door windows. In an earlier post I had asked for suggestions for possible upgrade component spkr sets that would be compatible with the factory HU w/o additional amplification. The replies posted sounded like the only spkrs up front were a pair of coaxial 6x8s. Is my factory setup an odd one? JeffD '04' M3s HB

I dont really know much about it, but supposedly there is some kind of RF transmitter that will adapt your controls to an aftermarket HU

JeffD:
No, its not 'odd' i have them also. i beleive they are only there so that mazda can say it's a "six speaker system." imo they aren't very loud so i dont think anyone really worries about them since when they upgrade their door speakers, they are usually going with 3 or 4 way speakers anyway. i think they may also be a pain to change out... another reason people dont worry about them.

i'm not sure what kind of speakers, i have the MS3 sport, it sounds pretty good without a sub, it has decent bass, but if i were you, go for the subs, it will give you more deep bass..hope this helps

yeh, i got a sub and it made everything great. plenty loud for a single 10 too.

check out kenwood. they have a 10'' sub/box/amp combo for about 200 buck .nice sound and not too big for the hatch. it is adjustable for both gain and frequency cut-off. however, if oyu upgrade youe stock HU i would go for something with more punch. otherwise, it's a great buy
