Turbo Destroying Transmission?

Hi all:

I am just wondering for those of you who has HiBoost Turbo, did you guys ever have any problems with stock transmission (MT of course)?

I heard rumor saying that Mazda 3's transmission won't hold up against 250hps from the turbo.....

I am asking because I too want to purchase a HiBoost one day but don't really want to blow my tranny...

Any advise would help

Thanks

John

The ATX's aren't known for being strong at all but HP isn't what breaks them...it's TQ.

Juan has made 508whp on his 3S hatch with the manual tranny and i was bone stock with the exception of a better clutch.

Cool,

I figure if I start my car careful enough and go easy on 1st and 2nd gear, the stock manual tranny should be fine...

But still, thanks a lot for the reassurance.....

just cuz he blew his 3rd gear, doesnt mean the turbo was at fault....
are you sure he wasnt just speed shifting??
like you know, not using the clutch??
cuz thats the best way to destroy a tranny...

You mentioned you had a manual trans....

Can an automatic hold up to a turbo? or do i need to beef that up?

Oh my gosh...I'm think i'm starting to build another hot-rod.

Should be good for up to 180HP or so, and don't go past 6-7 PSI. It wouldn't hurt to upgrade the valve body & torque converter but unless you plan on pushing some serious power then I wouldn't worry about it. Keep the boost down, and get used to the shift points so you can learn to ease off the gas while the tranny is shifting. I'm going to be turboing my auto P5 here soon and I've been practicing driving this way so the tranny isn't under stress while shifting. Just ease off the gas a bit, don't let off all the way cuz then it'll kinda buckle and probably be worse than if you left it alone, and it should shift nice and smooth for ya. Lemme know if you got more questions.

3rd gear WILL go with a turbo once you go past the 235-250whp/tq. I went thru 10 sets of 3rd and 1 4th gear in 1 1/2 yrs! But then again I'm running 335whp daily and climbing to upwards of 500whp now with a stand alone and GT35r. BUT... there are gears avail. I have a set in my car now and Juan is able to get some as well. Mine are from a different source and are dbl synchros (and more expensive). But like someone said already, if you stay low boost you should b fine.
