tomorrow morning I have to drive back to syracuse (it took me three hours to get there today.. I had to keep pulling over at every rest stop to do something about the wrenching back pain.. today was definitely the worst day so far) to sign papers.. *sigh* I wish my insurance agent called me 30 minutes before he did, I was barely on my way back but didn't want to add an hour to my drive time today when I'm driving the gas-guzzling v6.
I got all my stuff out of the car.. including radar detector, wideband, pioneer premier unit (I got the faceplate earlier), mazdaspeed floormats, infinity basslink.. it was sad picking apart my car like it was some dead carcass.
So tomorrow they open at 7:30.. I will be there as close to that as humanly possible to sign the paperwork. It isn't the "preferred" shop but I looked into the preferred shop http://nscollision.com/ and I don't really like what I read. It's just some big chain shop that is all about doing things as cheaply as possible.. not a fan.
The shop the car is at is CLEAN inside, very new (new building.. the company has been around since the 70s) and gigantic. There were two FDs in the parking lot, I wish one of them was their complimentary rental car :P
I had a one on one with the service manager to go over all my concerns. Aftermarket parts will not be used, the rear liftgate will be a used part but if it isn't just a matter of sand, weld badge holes, and repaint, it won't be used and a new one will be instead. --stuff like that. I even toured their really nice ppg paint booth and curing room (mm felt nice.. there was just a car in it so it was like 100 still ).
So that brings me to this. My insurance company thinks the car will not be totalled, but still isn't sure as the rear hatch cannot be opened. Once the body shop pries it open tomorrow, they will appraise again. I made it clear to the insurance agent I spoke to today (a car enthusiast myself) that if it means ignoring broken pieces of trim plastic inside the trunk, not fixing the scuff on the bumper, or using aftermarket taillights to have my car be worth repairing to them that I am ok with it. I want my baby back :'(

So yes.. hmm what changes will I be making?
I have a few ideas so far:
- rear bumper valance flat black, gloss black, or a metallic gunmetal that matches my wheels (I actually know the PPG code for that). Maybe not all of the valance.. maybe just the indented part, or just the bar that wraps around the indented part... or some mix.. really not sure where I'll go with this but it's something I definitely want to explore.
- If the break on the exhaust is the catback, or if I find damage to the exhaust tip caused by the accident --maybe a different catback? I'd have to go custom or maybe magnaflow (if their catback is 2.5" piping). Not a fan of anything else.
- Shaved badges on trunk. This is happening no matter what. I like my badges (especially since they are all gloss black and the 323F badge and such).. and I can still put them on, but just glued on no holes baby!!
- Maybe slightly darker tint on the rear glass. It's 20% now though so I doubt I'll do anything here.
- JDM or EDM taillights.. maybe. Insurance agent said it is 108 for a single aftermarket factory replica taillight. I know I can get the JDM pair for around 200. I'd go for it.. since it's the same price and all. Something is broken with the passenger side taillight, it wobbles a LOT. I'd have to do something with them though.. red out over the turn signal or something.
- .. rear spoiler? It would be easy enough to weld the holes shut for the stock spoiler, so I could get the autoexe spoiler and not have unsightly plugs. Since the spoiler wasn't damaged though.. this would be out of pocket and I have no job so it probably won't happen --unless I can have them just fill some of the holes, the ones you'd see with the autoexe, then break my stock spoiler so that it only needs like 2 holes to mount. I don't think I could go spoilerless for like 9 months until I have cash haha.
Unexpected extras:
- rusting rear fenders will be fixed.. and not just repainted, really fixed.
- rear fenders might be getting rolled.. I talked to them about this and it's definitely something they can do
- pool of water in the driver's footwell today. Body shop will take care of it

Nice to hear about the potential outcome. I have always liked your P5 and it would be a shame to see her go out like this. She deserves the head spot at your ranch when you retire her for good! And it sounds like you have some good things instore as well....totally cool about getting your fenders 'fixed'!

you mean giving the body shop? $4750 was the initial estimate but that wasn't including the front end damage (which is just a prep and repaint basically plus the bumper removal/install labor) and also doesn't include any chassis, suspension, alignment, etc stuff (which there is, they just can't fully inspect until they get the hatch door removed). The guy I talked to today hadn't seen the car in person, just the pics, but said he doesn't think it'll be totalled.

I just called the body shop and they gave me a heart attack. I called to have them fax me the form I gotta sign to authorize them to work on the car (I had to look up my e-fax number I didn't remember) and he asked me what car I was calling about. I said "the silver mazda", to which he responded "oh the one with the fancy wheels? it's totalled".
turns out there is another silver mazda now where with fancy wheels.
jesus that scared the crap out of me. The guy who answered is from the service side of the place not the body shop so he had it mixed up.
omjesus my heart is still racing though
