F my dealer/major oil change company
Again today, I found myself having to call my dealership and ask the "tech" a question. I was in an auto parts dept. with my manual in hand and was unable to determine what oil filter I needed due to a lack of 02 crosslistings. After getting transfered aroud at the dealership, I finnally spoke to the parts dude. He told me that only a mazda filter would fit. I told him my situation and asked for a cross listing of major brands. He reiterated his statement. I let him know that he had been real helpful to a customer and smahed the end button.
At this point, I called the mazda 800 number partly to bitch, but mostly just to keep from having to drop $35 at spiffy lube. Please hold.... You're call is important...Blah Blah....
Well after a road trip to wildwood to see the equally disapointing import eurasia (i want my $15 back!) I really needed to change my oil. So I went a major oil change company place where they sprayed oil all over my engine bay(those who know me will cringe at this statement). I went back to the manager to ask for a rag and he complemented all my custom work and gave me a rag and said thanks. Shmuck.
Thanks for the emotional support guys. Tommorow must be a better day!

Umm.... this is a guess, but I'm pretty sure that the part number for the Purolator Pure One is #14622. It's the same one for the Miata, and a bunch of other Mazdas and it works fine... It's a little longer than the OEM filter, but I haven't had any problems with it.
The Mobil 1 filter is the same size as the mazda filter, but it's very pricey. I can't remember the whole number, but It's something like M108.
Anyway, I've had no problems, go to your local auto store and check the parts book... and always buy a spare.

Actually, the OEM Mazda filters are great quality, and they're relatively in-expensive. Since I end up doing an oil change at least once a month (I commute far), it's usually at a moment's notice and I can't be bothered to drive 40 mins to the dealer for a filter.
One of these days I'm going to go back there, get my heat sheild bolt, and buy about 10 filters.

Read your manual, it states it very clearly.

No he wasn't, all scheduled maintanence work on your car can be done by any mechanic or even yourself. But you MUST use mazda parts or you will void your warrenty. This includes oil filters.

I don't believe that's the case in the US - I think US laws basically say that they can require the intervals, but they can only require particular brands of parts if they provide them at no cost.
