3K Car Stolen instead of 25K SUV
Does this make any sense?
PIERCE COUNTY - The lengths car thieves will go to get the car they want.
This time they physically lifted the car they wanted, in the meantime, passing up a much more expensive one.
The car the thieves chose wasn't worth much to begin with and now it's worth even less. But a stolen '86 Honda Prelude must have been worth quite a bit for a car thief to risk his life in a high-speed chase through Tacoma.
Just after 1:30 a.m. Monday, Pierce County Sheriff's deputies tried to stop a man reportedly driving the stolen Honda Prelude.
The suspect fled, hitting speeds up to 75 mph while leading the cops onto Highway 16, Interstate 5 and down side streets.
Just after 2 a.m. the suspect lost control of the car and crashed into a Sure-Fit Auto Interiors store in the 3700 block of South Tacoma Way, near the Tacoma Mall.
The only injuries: the driver broke his arm and leg.
That's how it ended, but it all started with a Herculean effort
"Basically they picked up my car and turned it sideways to get it and stole my car," said victim Jim Barbour.
That's right, a 4,000-pound car was lifted by hand.
Barbour had blocked his car in because someone had tried stealing it a few weeks ago.
He says he parked it all the way against the gate and parked his other car up against it bumper to bumper. But the thieves had 3-4 guys pick it up and turn it sideways and away they went.
The other car is new Nissan X-terra. That means the thieves passed up a $25,000 car to get to $3,000 car.
Neighbor Don Kueler just shakes his head and what happened in Jim Barbour's yard.
"I look at it now and it just isn't the same America that I've known," he said. "It really shocks me to see it."
But police say the car had expensive rims and wheels and a body style that's a top target of thieves.
And they were willing to lift 4,000 pounds just to get it.
The injured driver is in the hospital waiting to be charged while police look for whoever helped him lift the car.

And a car is only worth stealing if they have a customer for the parts.
