Well I think the reason my registry got messed up, was bc the motherboard company has a tool to install the bios through windows skipping the floppy, im not hugely trusting of asus lately.

Windows BIOS updates.. I'll admit, I've done it a couple times, but god is that a scary proposition :P

I won't have time to join back into the diagnostic discussion for a couple days.. it's the last week of the semester for me and frankly I'm computer-overloaded from my courses right about now :P

Oh I only directly use the floppy update the BIOS, all machines I build I always put one in but I haven't came across one without the floppy so in that case I'd just build a LiveLinux cd and boot it from there if I had too. But I can see using Windows being an issue, tht definitely could cause some failures. Really hope you get it sorted and post back with results.

ya, unfortunately I am needing to work on my thesis, and until my laptop is back from the shop(way to go HP laptop) I dont want to spend all day wiping the hard drive and installing everything for the 5th time probably in a month. Why cant there ever be easy fixes to computer problems...lets go back to punch cards!!

edit: called bestbuy and my laptop is in their receiving (I dont want to know how long they have had it and left it) of course before I can get it back they still have to do their tests on it...fried motherboard ftw, I wish I could find out if it was faulty from the start or if something happened to it, the last thing I did was run the recovery because the laptop was running slow since I had alot of stuff on it, figured I would do something helpful and start from scratch...the process was "to begin system recovery windows has to reboot. would you like to reboot?" yes...never turned on after that lol
triggered self destruct sequence ftw haha

went friday to pick up my laptop...now the HP quick launch buttons didnt work, they spent all weekend trying to fix it...nothing. The geeksquad guy today asked me what I wanted to do fix it or send it off for another 2 weeks. Granted its not as major as the motherboard fried out, but who would take something thats not fixed? I would bet that if I took it broken just so I could work on my project without being required to use my desktop, I would get another chance to take it back and they would give me some BS that they dont cover it.

I updated the vid card(the old drivers were from summer so wasnt too bad) but also updated the nforce4 chipset which I think was on stock drivers it seems I forgot when I did everything else. but I left it idle all day without any programs not including background stuff. and didnt get any bluescreens yay.

Hey thats good news. is it still working good for you? I'm building a new system right now, just picked up a couple of pieces this week so far I have this.

Coolermaster Praetorian 730 Chassis
OCZ GameXStream 600W PSU
Asus Maximus Formula SE Motherboard
4 GB Patriot DDR2 Dual Channel 800mhz Memory
2 x Vantec EZ-SWAP Sata enclosures
2 x WD 320GB SE16 Drives
2 x LG H54N DVD Writers
1 x Floppy Drive
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler
Scythe SFLEX Fans

Just waiting to order the Quad Core 2 cpu and nVidia 8800GT video card. So hopefully it will go together without a hitch.

quadcore and I wish I could afford an 8800, that system is gonna be sweet.

my system is well...mostly stable. I have gotten the same bluescreen problem running one of my dvd burning programs, I thought it was related to my sata- dvdrw but I also tried it in my ide dvdrw and still get the blue screen, but I have since switched to a new program and it works with no problem so I may just have to reinstall the program since the system has had such a change, other than that 1 program everything else is running smoothly.

Also Im not sure if windows is recognizing all 3gb of ram, when I look under system it shows 2.5. but when I use cpu-z program it shows all 3gb. I read that the max for windows-xp is 3gb so I dont understand why it would only see 2.5.

I think Im just gonna put up with it until I go home for christmas break, do a reinstall then I should have my laptop then (since everything is finally stable I am thinking just the install had too many problems go on) Im also thinking of maybe going to xp64 but I am gonna look into that some more.

The 8800GT is only going to be under $300, very affordable.

this summer...when I had a job, I almost bought one. I decided on a friday I would think about it for the weekend and probably buy it monday...got off work that day and my check engine light was on o2 sensor died and so the vid card money became repair money. So now it will have to wait till I graduate and get a full time job again.

Well just finally picked up my laptop...1 month later. Does it work? dont know...the battery is dead. Charge it!...they didnt give me my powersupply back...they said I didnt leave it with them! I could swear I had but its been a month and they had sent it off twice, I wasnt given paper work for the second time they sent it off, so apparently someone forgot to put that on there... So I called them back soon as I was sure I didnt have it and of course they found it...they apologized very quickly and now I get to do another 40 mile round trip for my powersupply.
Im just a glutton for punishment I guess.
