Caprice Auto to Manual Conversion
well guys im about to imbark on a sweet journey.... my second car that my dad and i share as out hauling/cruising car is gonna go under the lights (or above i guess) and go into surgery. This car is a 1992 Chevy Caprice Wagon (squashed whale, its grey) with a 305cubic inch V8 and a 4 speed auto tranny (POS).... so since ive been driving the protege daily and i love my manual (havent driven a auto since 1 month after having my learners permit when i was 15, and im currently 16 since july).... so i got in and had to drive it last week as my dad needed my car (dont ask... wasnt a pretty situation) so off he went with my P5 and im stuck with a Automatic Caprice.... regardless its fun to drive , since its a freakin boat.... but the tranny sucks and doesnt allow all the power to be used effectively.
So off i went searching for the past week for a manual transmission to put in her.... finally i found a site called bigfastcar.com which is a shop in washinghton d.c. who has a 6 speed manual conversion kit for the 90-96 caprice and 94-96 Impala SS.... so im reading and reading, finally i decide it looks good, T56 tranny from the corvette with all needed parts for about 2k, so i got it ordered and it came today.
So tomarrow night it begins, i will stay awake till sunday if thats what it takes, but i will be hauling some *** in that car with the 6 speed come monday to teach my friend with his civic a lesson, he swares this car will beat corvettes and the such (he has an intake, borla exhaust, and a 50 shot of N02) .....
Next mod to that baby will be a twin turbo kit ive heard of and new bucket seats..... what a car that will be
too bad there isnt a kit like this for our 75' Buick Electra Limited 2 door (this thing is like 2 feet longer than the excursion and only a ******* 2 door)
Well hope that wasnt too long, but what a sweet thing that will be once it is done

expensive expensive expensive.. YES it will be cool though.
I'm considering (once I have the money) getting a Caprice 9c1 sedan (ultra super police package, only one worthwhile IMHO) with the LT1 5.7L and someday if the auto tranny breaks go 6spd.. it'll turn like no revs on the highway in 6th gear
good luck with your adventure.. definitely keep us posted!

'96 Impala SS
If there was any car that I would trade my Protege in a second, would be for a '96 Impala SS. And the second I did that, I would do that conversion to the 6sp Manual. Baby, that is a SMOKIN car... I've seen a 3 of them here in the Lower mainland. Few of them have personal license plates, "BEASST" "4DR VET" are 2 that I see freqently. One has 21" on it.. looks SOOOOO sweet..

Yea i hear ya on that, those impalas kick!
Well the word is, HOLY ****.... driving that car with a 6 speed kicks assssssssssssssssssss.............. i was getting pushed back in my seat like none other from the torque..... and my back tires are worn to crap (well not really, but will be soon) from this mother.... i pulled off a nice *** burnout at my school parking lot at 4 in the morning....
the installation took us about 12 hours of straight working, 3 guys, a lift, garage of tools, and 3 6 packs....
gonna have to do that more often

So...what kind of changes did you have to make to the pulley/belt layout? Did you have to change chips? What about electricals? Steering coumn? Differential? Is there a website where we can see the kit?
