Chemical Warfare
I was wondering what everybody thought about the chance of getting hit by chemical or biological weapons? I go to school in Long Beach, CA, about 20-25 min outside of downtown LA. (A place that is at the top of terrorists list) Tomorrow my school is having a campus evacuation drill and meetings on how to prepare for a strike of biological weapons. The news is strongly advising that people stockpile food and buy duct tape and plastic sheets to cover windos and doors of homes. What does everybody think about this? Even you people in Canada who may not be directly affected by this.

Well there's about a 0% chance of me being hit, so I'm not really worried.
The only thing that bothers me though is when the infected people start to spread it to Canadians. If a chemical bomb does hit the USA, I hope none of the Americans try to flee to Canada.

yeah, duct tape - great solution, huh? I wonder if the US Army uses such drastic pre-cautions for chem-warfare!
What do I think... time to buy stock in 3M and other manufacturers of plastic and duct tape!
Don't you all think it funny that the Gov't takes extreme measures for protection of itself (irradiated mail; increased security; secure bunkers, etc - all at taxpayers expense) and yet proposes plastic and duct tape for citizens?
I actually wonder how real these "threats" are, or whether this is just a ploy to scare the public into supporting a War (which BTW, will only increase the likelihood of future terror attacks rather than reduce it). Incidentially, haven't heard much news about Afghanistan lately; apparently our "War on Terror" hasn't been too successful..

I think the govt. has put up the warnings so if something does happen, they can say that they warned us. I do think that it is a possibility that they post these warnings to help us support the war, but I do think it could actually happen.

Yeah like we haven't had any warning in the past that mad us all run and hide.
Seriously, there have been soo many terrorist warning since 9/11 that the meaning of it, it dissolved in confusion. I don't hardly take it serious anymore and I doubt half of America does. Every week there is a new terror threat.
Opinion: Watch closely girls and boys, you are about to witness the beginning to World War 3. In 50 years, sadly, i don't believe the US will be a super power anymore. Thank Bush for beginning the chain of events that will bring America to it's knees.

Too bad we've sent so many active duty and reservist folks to the Mid East - it would be nice having them at home to protect us. Which, brings up the aspect that reserve Call-ups have a major impact on our police and emergency personnel, many of whom are indeed "week-end warriors". Thus we've reduced the numbers of the very folks we depend upon for our security. Hmmm, maybe the baggage checkers will save us.
In the meantime, I'm rolling in plastic; I would head for the hills, but sadly, most of them have been developed...

These Times Are Horrifying
I think everyone living in larger metro areas in the U.S. are possible targets, thanks in large part to the Bush Administration's interest in being this century's ultimate global police squad. It should be evident to any moron that when we (the United States) attack Iraq (not if, but when), there is going to be some kind of response. Unfortunately we will never know for sure where that will be.
Regarding Iraq, they haven't the capability of initiating missile attacks from their position directly on the United States, but they WILL attack Israel, and they WILL have someone attack us through smaller means somewhere in the U.S.. Make no mistake: You'd have to be an arrogant bastard (kind of like Bush) to think otherwise.
I find the rampant disregard for international opinion most distasteful, and these actions, together with a rash of other domestic policies, including blatant “let’s favor the rich” budget proposals, are destroying this nation and creating further reason to hate America abroad. It is not for us to forward grandiose delusions of superiority over all other countries in the world. We live here together, collectively, and we must forward policy designed in the spirit of cooperation and peace. THAT’S the hallmark of a great country. Not one of aggression.
One case in point being, guess which country is considered the greatest threat to international peace these days? Iraq? North Korea? Libya? Chechnya? I’m afraid not—It’s the United States. What a great example we’re leading in our world, eh? It’s totally disgusting.
Now, because of what we’re about to be doing in Iraq, people in this country have to live in fear of attack. Not even during the Gulf War was I so concerned about such things. These are the worst times I’ve ever known in my lifetime.
In my opinion, Canada is a much more level headed, progressive nation. I of course wish no harm to my own fellow United States citizens, but I think future attacks against us are already inevitable, in one form or another. Based thereon, I definitely hope what befalls us does not spill over into Canada, as they are not the target of aggression and do not deserve to pay for what the United States does. Alas, however, I’m afraid the entire world will be paying for what we do.
War, as can be attested to by any veteran who’s been there, is the ultimate hell. It must always be a last resort option. The Iraqi regime, while certainly no bed of roses, cannot directly threaten the United States-- We are too powerful and they are too weak, and the distances between us are too great to allow them any practical means of waging large scale attack on us. They are a petty, poor, comparatively primitive country. While they cannot be underestimated, they also should not be overestimated. They cannot threaten us more than, say, North Korea can. If you want to get defensive and paranoid about a country, THEY’RE the ones that should be feared. Not Iraq.
I don't tend to be a religious sort, but God help us. It's far fetched, but we're at a point in history where our technology is too great to survive another World War. At all costs, this aggression must not be allowed to escalate...

That reminds me of the "duck and cover" crap of the cold war. It is just to give people a false sense of security, and keep them from panicing ("oh, look, a nuclear explosion... hide under the pick-nic blanket!"... yeah, right).
Tape and plastic are not going to keep anything out. Maybe for an extra minute or so... but it´s just to give people something to do in the meantime.

I agree fully with all the views expressed in this thread by our neighbours (Americans)....
I am actually starting to think more and more of Clinton now that Bush has had the power for a bit... I mean I'll take sex scandals over war scandals anytime....
It also bothers me that there's such a big discrepancy in what the government wants to do and in what the public thinks is the best thing to do.
Anybody who drives a Protege is more then welcome to move up here and migrate in Canada hehehe
