"the mass media and the justice system constitute two institutions jointly responsible for much of what we learn about the social order. together they turn events in the physical world into narratives...of what ought to be, fusing facts with normative commitments, values, and myths....journalism is a process of mythmaking. news is not information but drama - it does not describe the world, but portrays an arena of dramatic forces and action." -Deviance and Social Control
in other words, the news is full of s#*t!!

It wont be long for the USA to be the victim of a nuclear attack. Whether it be a back-pack bomb, ICBM, or plane induced bomb, it's going to happen.
Bush is practically ASKING for it. He's taunting the world. Look at how he talks, and how he seriously belives that the USA is invincible. Just because it has a large miliarty force, doesn't mean it can't be taken down.
If someone wanted to bad enough, and there ARE people out there, the USA will fall eventually. It's sad, yes, and I hope it never happens but it will.
For all we know, half of the world could be secretly conspiring to take out the USA all together in a joint effort. It wouldn't be too far fetched. Bin Laden is one super genious, whether you want to admit it or not, and he's very dangerous. Sadam Hussein is a wildcard and that makes him dangerous too.
Either way, chemical or nuclear, it's too bad they didn't kill Hussein back in '91 when they had the chance. They're paying for it now.

No boyfriends though, sorry, they can defend your country with honour while I shoot some moose and deer for food and grow weed, I mean hemp for rope, paper and clothing, and protect the Protege ladies.

Yeah, real grown up and mature. Kill millions of people for the mistakes of a few. May as well just stamp a big swastika on Bush's head and get ready for the new holocaust. There is no way in hell I'm risking my neck for that draft dodging, duty abandoning, mother ******. If they open the draft for this crap you are looking at a new Canadian or Mexican citizen.
If Bush is serious about this then his foot needs to be the first one to touch that damn sand and the last one to leave. But he won't, just like his daddy called him out of Nam, he will be a REMF again.

we are going to attack iraq. it's just a matter of time. i just hope i'm there, cause whatever happens here could be much worse. at least there i know i can shoot someone trying to hurt me. and i will know who the enemy is. here it could be anyone. with how easy anthrax is to make, every major city could be hit. i wouldn't worry about nukes. they cost too much to produce. chemical and biological weapons are cheaper, and quieter. and not many countries have the technology to build a large nuke, let alone a small one. i'm seriously worried about what happens when we surround sadam in baghdad. if there is nothing left in his country, what's to stop him from popping a nuke in baghdad, when US soldiers are knocking at the door? when he has nothing left to rule, he's got nothing to lose. he's also been in for cancer therapy, so there's a possibility he's dying. there's also a rumor that bin laden was looking so sickly, cause he was waiting for a kidney transplant. since he seems to be doing better, he probably got it. i just hope that bush follows through with what he said. if sadam uses any weapons of mass destruction on our troops, or citizens, we will retalliate with nuclear force. and i hope they aren't just gonna use the tactical theatre nukes, which are really small. i hope they turn iraq into a parking lot

Everyone seems to be forgetting that we got attacked when Bush wasn't planning on attacking anyone. And believe me that they would still be attacking us if we weren't getting ready to attack Iraq. Saddam and Osama and the people that foolishly follow them HATE the US whether we are attacking Iraq or not. Doesn't anyone remember images of the WTC? Who were we getting ready to attack back then? People need to realize that the US is going to be a terror target regardless what we do. At least getting Saddam out of power would be start. And for those of you that think Bush doesn't think there is going to be a retaliation doesn't know much about how this whole thing works. Believe me he knows. But do you want to keep having this threat or start doing something about it. Yes things will happen but we have to start doing something to try and stop it. Enough is enough already. I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion but I felt I had to say it. Let the bashing my opinion begin.

I think your last line above actually succinctly describes the methods of the current Amdinistration. Bush has already labeled the good and evil of the world; faith-based initiatives are imposing morality, and the Patriot Act has enabled more government control on US citizens than has ever been known. My beef with the News, is that they pander to this mindset and haven't the backbone to stand up for the freedoms we hold so dear.

yeah, duct tape - great solution, huh? I wonder if the US Army uses such drastic pre-cautions for chem-warfare!
What do I think... time to buy stock in 3M and other manufacturers of plastic and duct tape!
Don't you all think it funny that the Gov't takes extreme measures for protection of itself (irradiated mail; increased security; secure bunkers, etc - all at taxpayers expense) and yet proposes plastic and duct tape for citizens?
I actually wonder how real these "threats" are, or whether this is just a ploy to scare the public into supporting a War (which BTW, will only increase the likelihood of future terror attacks rather than reduce it). Incidentially, haven't heard much news about Afghanistan lately; apparently our "War on Terror" hasn't been too successful..

I believe the news services picked this information of "suggested" precautions from a DHS website. And while I agree with your take on "news", it is safe to say that the Gov't uses the media for its own purposes - why else bother with press releases, news conferences, etc. Even worse, when you consider that organizations such as NBC which is owned by GE (one of the largest defense contractors), then it seems we have to question most information we receive...News organizations are manipulated and often used as propaganda or disinformation tools - there are Pentagon staff whose very job is to do just that.
