www.xbox-scene.com
- they both have a pretty good comparison chart of all the generations of mod chips out. One big new feature is many of the newer ones have external switches to go back to the original bios for playing on xbox live.
I'll prolly be getting mine from www.modchip.ca seeing as i'm from canuckistan..
linux! ftp server! mp3 playabilty! progressive scan! the xbox gets 100 times better with a chip!

i got one of the first batch of x-ecuter 2's from extreme-mods!!!
it arrived just after xmas day and i had it installed in just over an hour. the soldering looks challenging for someone who's never seen a soldering iron, but it really isn't and boy is it worth it! there is soo much information around and photos etc, showing you how to do it that anyone can do it if you're a bit careful.
now, if i was inclined towards the illegal () i could theorecitally hire as many games as i wanted and rip them to my new 80GB hard disk with xbcopy and never have to buy a game again!
not to mention the dvd movies and mp3's i have on there and the region free dvd capabilities. blah, blah, i could go on......
its more than worth it when you consider that if you ever want to take your xbox somewhere, you don't have to carry a whole pile of dvd cases with you.
if there are any questions just fire away!

I hear ya. I love that game. I've also been hooked on SegaGT w/ my 96 typeR and a 96 Evo4.
I was also looking at a modchip and the Xecuter2 looks like a good pick. I might get it in a few months.

- with the chip, you can still play original games and movies, correct?
- what dashboard are you running? EvoX? do you always have to boot it off the cd, or can you drop it onto and boot it off the hard drive? Whenever I read about it, it's always 'boot from the cd and do this or that'
- did you put the progressive scan patch on? does that work with original dvds or only ripped ones?
Basically the only reason i truly want to chip my box is for mp3 playability and the ftp server. That way I can swap out the hard drive for something bigger, dump all my mp3s onto it and never have to blow the dust off my cds again.
I'm not big on pirating software, movies or music in general. If i like it i buy it. Just the way i am i guess.
Did you have problems with your drive not reading cdr/cdrw? I've read that a lot of the older xboxes (like mine) have a finicky dvdrom... Not too excited about that I must say...

you sure can still play original games and movies but there are a couple of ways to go about it. personally, i installed a two position switch to turn the x-ecuter on or off (you're gonna need this if you intend to use xbox live or you'll get banned for ever!
so to watch an original movie, i just switch the bios off and boot like normal - you can also launch the original dashboard from evox if you feel like it but i prefer the "clean" way.
i'm running evox as a default but i've got nexgen there as well just to support the community - it's too unstable to use just yet but it will eventually rule.
it boots off the hard disk of course - it's only a matter of copying two files to the c: and you're away!
booting from the cd is how you get out of trouble when you screw things up - a last resort when you can't ftp to the box - a safety net if you like.
i don't have a progressive scan patch - don't know what it is
hope i don't need it. lol
the xbox media player will give you good service with your new hard drive and your billions of mp3s and the ftp server is pretty damn fast cos its a direct connection
i buy software too, just not stuff i think i'm gonna delete within a month - movies are a classic example. i've already had one instance where i went away for a weekend having copied three movies to the xbox - we watched them and i deleted them come monday cos i don't wanna see them again (and they take up 4 gigs or so). over here new release movies are only hireable overnight which is crap so this is how i get around it.
i had no problems at all with either cdrw or originals and i have the old thomson dvd drive. from what i read, it is kinda media dependant but pretty much all cdrw's work. you will not get it to read a cdr.

i've only been able to get off the ship on legendary trying to do the next bit where you cross the bridge and run up the side of the hill gets depressing after the 20th attempt - in fact i find myself getting really mad and cursing/waving my hands about madly!! hahaha
did you do it by yourself or with a partner?

Currently, a stock Xbox can play games in High Def, but not movies. This was due to licensing restrictions or something. The progressive scan patch supposedly fixes that and allows movies to be played with PS active.
Good news on the thomson drive. I guess i'll just cross my fingers that my current brand of cdrws works..
I guess all thats left is to order it and wait for it to appear in my mailbox!

sorry, i must have been a bit vague. of course you can play originals with the chip enabled. if you use evox, you will have an option on the main screen to "Play DVD". evox will detect wether its a game or a movie and play it with no problem at all.
i just prefer to watch original movies using the microsoft dash/remote control but that's just a personal preference. if i had dvd's from another region, i'd have to use dvdx2 which removes the region protection but isn't remote control enabled - you use the game controller instead
i think i'll go and read some more about this progressive scan thingy.......

Thanks for all your help! Much appreciated!
Another question.. when you soldered the d0 point - did you use the point on top the mobo or underneath it? apparently you have a choice and one is way harder to solder than the other
