I just upgraded about 3 months ago... I got a really nice deal, I think....
Asus A7V333 Raid
AXP 1800
512M PC2700
Maxtor 80G 7200RPM
19" Flat CRT (I love it)
Geforce4 4200 128M (I dont' game THAT much)
Plextor 40/12/40
Liteon 16x DVD
I got everything I needed minus keyboard about mouse for around $1200. I could have probably gotten it cheaper, but I got it from a local business around here that I really like... Might as well keep the business local.

Your current setup should be reasonably snappy-- If you really are having speed issues, here are things you should look in to:
1. How's your BIOS setup? You could have it set to run your processor at speeds much lower than it's designed for. Make sure your BIOS settings match those the processor is supposed to run at (1.3 GHz).
2. You're sure you've the correct video drivers? A Radeon 9000 with 128 megs of video RAM should easily be very fast. Something's gotta be wrong with your set up if you're lagging.
3. Is your RAM okay? Do you have the BIOS correctly set to run the memory at proper speed? Is each stick of different manufacturers?
4. Do you have any network connections? Your system could be stopping in wait for something off the network and hanging up normal speed. What about Java applications? You running a funky web browser? Sometimes a Java app can hog your processor cycles and really slow **** down.
5. Is your video game properly set to operate off of the Radeon card? You could have some weird-*** setting in the game that's screwing up your speed.
If you were inclined for more speed, you could upgrade your Duron to an Athlon-- They're really not much more expensive than Durons (Durons are being discontinued, by the way), and you get considerably better performance.
And oh yeah! AMD CPU's normally run pretty hot-- It's critical to have a properly running heat sink and fan on it at ALL times. If you ever take the cooling assembly off, ever, even for a few seconds, you'll destroy your processor and likely your entire computer. DANGER: I KID YOU NOT!! Even a few seconds will DESTROY your computer!!
You've gotta check this out! It's a long download but worth watching!

I just had a local computer company build me a p4 2.8g machine with 512ddr, 120gig hd, geforce4 ti 4600 128mb video card, on board sound, and lan, cdrw, dvd,3.5 floppy for only $1199 american dollars. This bitch is soo awesome, i have a 21" flat screen monitor that i play metal of honor and tiger woods 2003 on. Just thought i would let you know. Tiger direct always has good deals on computers so i would check with them, and also try your local computer stores they can build you anything you want!

2. my vcarddrivers are the latest ones from ATi
3. ram is running at 100mhz because the vcard doesn't like it at 133mhz (this bug is confirmed) but its running 4way interleave and stuff and @ cas2 even though 1 chip is cas 3 LOL
4. yeah i got a network but i turned off all the useless services in winxp and no i only have IE6.0 (opera is installed but not used ever cept in emergencies)
5. 3dmark2001 only uses D3D so its limited there.. software renderers are just crap
6. i just upgraded to a duron LOL from a slower duron, my Abit KT7 won't take athlon XP's
7. yeah i got a proper HSF but it sux, its only a super orb and the temp is 41°C at idle i have ~275CFM going though my case thanks to the 12 fans LOL. my mobo/system temp is 19°C
- 3, 4000 RPM 80mm fans (front + back + blowhole)
- 1 nidec Gamma blower (~52 CFM)
- exhaust blower (42CFM)
- super orb (2 fans @ 5100+RPM)
- dual HD coolers
- upgraded mobo chipset cooler + HS

Yes, I'm a computer nerd . I'm an MIS major, and this stuff is fun for me. Anyway, this is the second system I've built, although many of the parts were recycled from my first system. The specs:
Case: Antec SX800 with Enermax 330w PS
Motherboard: Epox 8KHA+ Socket A KT266A chipset
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (1.40 GHz)
Hard Drive: Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 30GB 7200RPM
RAM: 256MB Crucial DDR SDRAM (One module)
CD/DVD Rom: 8X Samsung SD-608 DVD Rom
CDRW: Lite-On 40X
Video Card: ATI Rage 128 16MB
Sound Card: Philips Acoustic Edge
Heatsink/CPU Fan: Thermaltake Volcano 6cu with Arctic Silver thermal compound
I need to at least double my memory, but the prices are ridiculous right now. Ans yes, I know I need a new vid card . It's definitely tops on the list.
