Good choice in my opinion.
Now if your like me you'll spend a fortune on upgrades. (my fork has more travel than my buddies Ducati 996, and my brakes are Magura Hydraulic twin piston calipers)
Almost as bad as fixing up a car!
Happy Riding!

Nice choice, I rode the Trek 4900 recently while testing. I just got bitten by the MB bug again, and I decided to go with the Giant Rainier based on the feel and sweet component set (and disc brakes). My second choice was the Gary Fisher Tassejara, which also felt great but the disc version is $50 more than the Rainier and has weaker components aside from that.
My last bike was a '96 (or thereabout) Mount Shasta Pachanga - man I've been out of biking too long!

my friend is just now getting me into buying a serious mountain bike... i'm actually looking at the gary fisher joshua, but damn that's an expensive bike... the bike shop near me i selling it for about $900-1000 instead of the $1550 they were charging for it.... really depressing, it's a real nice looking bike.

That may be true for some Gary Fishers, I don't know. But isn't the Genesis Geometry exclusive to certain bikes in the GF line? The frame is significantly different from most other bikes, the Genesis Geometry is what I liked about it. If there is a Trek version of the Tassajara, please let me know what it is as I'd like to go check it out.

Fishers are well built but a bit heavy, same as GT, great bike but weighty. (and I'm not a gram counter) Quite happy with my Marin, light, quite strong, a really nice handling bike. My next one would probably be a Kona Explosif.
