If I put some weight over the back tires both of my trucks are fine in the snow. I usually carry around a big bag of sand in the winter to keep them planted (by the way I haven't lived in Houston my whole life, I used to live in West Texas and we did have snow). None of the SUV's my family has owned were ever that hard to manuever in the snow. It was easy to lose traction in any of the vehicles (FWD or RWD) if you put your foot into it. I would say the debate is more one of A) whether there is any weight over the rear wheels, B) whether you are trying to gun it in the snow and ice.

from 3 weeks of driving the rx-7 and comparing it to driving the Protege, I have to say the rx-7 is, by a HUGE margin, much more fun to drive. Somehow it just feels more nimble and more 'natural' to drive. Amazing how a 11 year old car still DRIVES better than a 2 year old car (though the car is showing its age in the comfort department)
This is under dry road condition of course, under slippery condition may be a whole different story, as I have yet to drive the RX-7 in snow.... we shall find out

rwd better than fwd during REAR END COLLISION.
drive shaft adds to give support through the lenght of the car so that it doesn't crumple as much when something slams into your butt.....
maybe.... my guess
