Got me a deer! (sort-of)
Well folks, I ran over a deer carcass a couple weeks back. Man was I pissed.
I was going to a jobsite early in the morning taking back roads. It was still dark as I turned a corner, saw a vehicle on the on-coming shoulder with its flashers on...no headlights. This road expands to two lanes in my direction as it heads up a hill.
There was traffic coming down the hill, so I dimmed my high beams, and pulled to the far right lane to allow the on-coming traffic to pass the stricken van. I was looking at the van as I approached to see if they needed assistance, when out of the corner of my eye I saw brown...seconds later I saw my coffee cup floating next to me as I felt a sharp bang and a lot of nasty noise.
I realized the guy had hit a deer and flung it three lanes over to my side of the road where I ran over its flanks. I rolled to a stop up the hill and a guy stopped to shine his lights on the car and the damage didn't look too bad...the undertray was messed (just replaced it $230.00) and the was a little steam and fluid. The guy told me there were repair 'shops over the hill, so I limped it to the top of the hill where the serpintine belt broke...the dash board lit-up and I shut down and coasted to a shop to wait for them to open..
It was over $2,000.00 to repair...the a/c compressor was cracked...which was the 'steam' and some of the fluid. The other fluid was a damaged motor mount. TYhe guys did a great fixing her up for a small town shop (think I have a new mechanic). The van was a total...
Good to have her back...and now I am deer paranoid...bastards! (Damn lucky it was lying down)

I remember when I was doing my tech prep engineering crap in high school. The Vocational school principal brought his sons car in to the schools body shop. The whole front end was smashed to hell. He had hit a deer. Well technically, the (pregnant) deer charged him while he was doing 55. We had to put a whole new front clip and engine on that gran dam (intentional). The whole repair bill would have been more than the car would have been worth if taken to a shop. BTW... I do great work.
