How To Keep Hostile Jerks From Taking Over Your Online Community

kinda funny that I'm posting this huh, seeing as I was just recently banned from a quite large online forum for being a "troll" ..it's a very good read though.
That being said, by definition I wasn't being a troll, because I wasn't just out to pick a fight, I was voicing my opinion against the administration because his rules were hurting the community I had helped build.

Another good read I just got linked to:

"Somy Community Tips for 2007"
"If you're building a community you have to love what you're doing and be the best member of it. It takes great care and patience to create a space others will share and you have to nurture it and reward your best contributors." -- um yes!!!

You guys should've joined us a while ago .. I can't believe you've been missing out this whole time. I joined this board as a total n00b .. I was like 16 or 17 and these guys taught me pretty much everything I know about my car. I never got flamed even once althought I probably deserved it a couple times so it was definitely quite easy to make myself at home here. Whereas the "other" forum was the complete opposite. I like their For Sale section cuz it's got some heavy traffic but that's it...

That 2nd link is a good one Chris, something all my mods should read ... and echos a lot of the things I've learned over the years. I started rx7club.com in 1996, and it's honestly taken me this long to truly learn what it takes to deal with people online instead of in person. It's a totally different dynamic.
As far as this place, I know a lot of stuff happened in the past that really hurt the membership. I can tell you all that I wasn't a part of any of that, and acquired the site because it hurt me to watch it happen. Looking forward to the future, I can say with 100% certainty that you're all going to be VERY pleasantly surprised at some of the tricks I have up my sleeve. We're not only going to blow away the other Mazda sites, we're going to raise the bar for every forum out there.
Owning rx7club.com and rx8club.com as well gives me some real power. We generate more traffic among these 3 sites than any of the other Mazda sites times 10. That means serious revenue generating potential, which I've only begun to explore. I now have a dedicated development staff, and a killer server infrastructure - and most importantly a plan Hang tight guys, you're going to love what happens next.

But he got b& :P
yeah it's sad that antoine can't grasp the basic concepts of running a community as outlined in that second link. They really are both great reads, someone who is still on the other forum should post the articles in the mod section. I'll definitely keep both of those in mind whenever I'm doing any moderation and other stuff
