My friend just got a 1G DP. How fast is it? RC5 at 20,000kkeys/sec. He ripped his CD collection (200 discs) in 3 days.

Actually, Mac OS X's kernel is based on BSD Unix. Unfortunately for the Linux movement, Mac OS X is everything Linux should have been... a good, well supported GUI built on top of Unix. There are thousands of commercial applications and tons of hardware support. In addition to having Unix behind it, Apple is pretty much tops when it comes to hardware. There is nothing more annoying than hardware compatability with Wintel machines (plug and pray)... Apple has been true plug and play for years!
Now that Apple has introduced their Xserve rack-mounted 1U servers, administrators running Unix and Linux servers are taking a very close look at Apple. Almost every business app is available on the Mac and running Unix-based Mac servers to serve Mac machines is a dream come true and ends up being cheaper because Apple doesn't charge you for individual client licenses. GUIs too childish for you? That's fine... just brind up the Unix command line.
As for the new commercials, I like them. It answers so many people's concerns that if use a Mac, you can't interoperate with the rest of the world. Plus, Apple has already seen a surge in visits at their retail locations and on-line store. Will sales follow suit? We just have to wait and see...

This is great info. You are the second person who has bitch-slapped me with BSD. Thanks for the info!

With the Mac, you can run Mac OS X, Mac OS 9, and BSD Unix at the same time. Add Virtual PC and you can run all of the above plus Linux, Windows 3.x, 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, and DOS all at the same time! Although, you better put that 1.5 GB of RAM in.

Seems to be a pretty good thread i started here. Really seems to have brought all the basement geeks out of the wood work...
I really don't have a problem with a person's preference of OS, but when it comes to a job of getting them all to talk to each other, well **** me.... Usually the blame falls on the minority like any other point of life.
Sure there are good things out there, but do you really think that they are some day going to knock little billy off the throne???
I may be just a tadddddd brain washed I admit. But what can you do when you live in a shoe and work there....

Thats why I drive a mazda and run a Linux box as well as a PC at home.
When it comes to an organziation with 1200+ PC nodes in operation that kinda takes precedence. Believe me the people in my company who do run Mac's (graphic prod.) think they're the best thing going. It's always going to be a 2 way street and how much knowledge you have in a particular area weighs heavily on how easily you can accomplish a set task.

Are they running OS X yet? They may be stuck in Classic most of the time because a lot of software is just now being converted to run natively in OS X.
However, each upgrade to OS X has always included more support for Windows networks. In fact, Rendezvous, which will be introduced in "Jaguar" (OS 10.2) this summer, will feature automatic discovery of available computer services on standard IP networks. The improvements to the finder will also allow Macs to browse Windows servers and connect to Windows PPTP VPN networks.
Now that Apple has introduced the X Serve, look for a whole slew of new multi-platform networking abilities for the Mac. They not only want to widen their small slice of the pie... they want to take bites out of everyone else's...
