My video card at work sucks. this is the second time its happen at work. i dont know if you can tell from this pic.

it has shadows across it big time. and its not as bright anymore. i already hook another monitor to it and did the same thing.

its a Nvidia riva TNT2 32mb im getting it replaced b/c the computer is still under warranty. but just wanted to know if anyone else has seen this?

lol i have one of those two in my work machine.... but this thing is even more of a pile.... gay NT4.0 with everything locked out.... but hey i can still be on aim and surf the web on the slow *** internet.... so im happy i guess,minus being bored on 4 hours of sleep

Keep in mind that the tnt2 card is a good 4 years old. Although I can't see what you're talking about, monitors are definately more to blame than video cards. Also, if you're running the newest detonator drivers, there are supposed to be quite a few bugs in it.

 

I agree with you, but he said he's tried another monitor with the same results. I'm not sure what could be causing the shadows...maybe you're getting EM interference at your particular desk?

 

yeah maybe monday i will take a pic of it. We had this problem with another computer last month. and a new video card helped. maybe its the drivers for xp. i dunno the card is really freakin hot. why didnt they put a fan on this bastard.

 

I've seen similar problems with monitors when the power is a little dirty. I've had problems with power bars that the monitor was plugged into, and an old UPS. Also when my washing machine kicks in (it is an antique) I get a noticable flicker in my monitor. Another thing that will cause this is a bad monitor cable (might just be a POS or have a kink in it), and also by cheap SVGA switch boxes.

I've owned a number of NVidia products and can say that I have never had a problem (including the TNT2) like you describe that I could blame on the video card.

Don't say all Nvidia cards suck just from ONE bad experience (where the video card may not be the culprit). It is like saying all import cars suck *** because you had a 1987 Hyundia Pony that was a rusted out piece of crap.

Having said that...Nvidia cards are not known for stellar 2D performance. At work I (where I don't game) I use Matrox products when I can, I honestly haven't seen many cards that do 2D quite as well.

Matrox is dead or dying. ATI IMO provides excellent 2D and 3D performance.

ATI has had a very bad history when it comes to driver support, especially when it comes to OpenGL application (like 3D Studio Max and Pro/Engineer). The hardware is fine, I've just personally had VERY bad experience with the drivers. However, this is pre-Radeon experience....but something just leaves a bad taste in your mouth after you get burned for the 100th time

Matrox has never been a gamer card, and as a result have had crappy 3D performance and support. But for 2D applications, very hard to beat. And the dual head (multi monitor support) is second to none.

I've heard that Matrox is releasing a hot new 3D chipset. I don't know much about it. But there is excitment in the 3D Gamer world.

So far what has been realeased of the new matrox card (called the parhelia) hasn't been very promising. I've read from a number of sources that the perfomance was behind the Geforce4 cards and the Radeons.

I agree with the ATI drivers. Apparently there were new drivers released a little while ago for the All In Wonder Radeon 8500, and the performance for the card went up by about 20%. That's impressive, but it just goest to show how crappy their drivers can be.

 

And historically they released drivers on a very slow and spotty schedule. And on more than one occasion they they pulled a newer release driver off their website, so that the driver I had on a year old CD was newer. THAT does not inspire confidence.

I'm not trying to get down on ATI, because with the exception of their driver issues, they have great cards. They pretty much have pioneered the All in Wonder idea of vid. cards. Also, the images quality and 2D performance is supposedly quite a bit better than the competing Nvidia cards. But for those of us who aren't always using photoshop (for 2D performance) and have really high-quality monitor (think 21" trinitrons, etc.), we really won't notice a difference. I think ATI has done a great thing with their Radeon's, but they really have to work out some issues before leading the pack in 3D game performance (which is probably the biggest market for upgrading vid. cards).
