Question Temporarily Suspending insurance

A friend of mine was telling me that I could temporarily suspend my insurance , know I am curious about this , because during the Winter , the Protege will be parked in the yard, and basically not moved , aside from the occasional start up and warm up..
but anyway have any of you people ever heard about this ....
temporarily suspending your insurance and specifying a date for them to reinstate it

I don't know about actually specifying a date to reinstate the insurance. But I know that up here we can get "storage" insurance which just covers theft, valdalism, etc. I can't be driven on the road under this insurance. You should be able to have them prorate your existing policy and then put some variation of storage insurance on it.

Good luck.

Andre stored his rx7 for the winter and just got it out of storage, now hes gotta get the insurance back and runnin.

i would just call your ins and they will tell you exactly what to do
Exactly.

I had a lot of people telling me that I couldnt do that (even some insurance people )

So we said **** that and just cancelled it since (at least in MN) you're only required to have insurance WHILE YOUR DRIVING THE INSURED CAR.

Bruce, I know that in NY as soon as you suspend the insurance on a vehicle (I do it to a truck I have) you need to remove the registration on it. In my case getting a new registration each year for the three months I need the truck is cheaper than insuring it for the whole year.

As a matter of NYS law as soon as you pull the insurance from the car the company has to report that to NYS and they yank the registration.

Yes, you can do it. I have been doing this here in Maine all the time. As part of curiculum of the school, I have to be working for one year on a real job, it is usually 3 or 6 months stunts. Well, I have done a few for which I needed the car. Though, when I was done, the car set home, and no insurance needed to be paid, and when I wanted to use the car again, I gave my insurance agaent a call, and it was that simple.

i'm taking the collision coverage off my mustang when it goes into storage in the winter. i keep the plates and the comprehensive on it though. saves about 75% of the monthly cost.

I want to do this because in the Winter the 323 will be prime transportation (no more flossing dogz) and I want the Protege to be chilling in the yard locked up and under a car cover.. I just don't want it taking on the grunt of winters anymore .. I could also rework some of the mods and probably attain more parts and so forth for the car .. instead of spending money on insurance for a car I won't be driving ....
I will be looking into this though .....
Also what do you guys think of Progressive..
Right now I have NYFire and Mutal ..
Bruce
thank you for your help guys

let me know whom you go with, at the moment I am getting reamed by Met P&C (I dropped my second car from the policy and they RAISED my rates!!!!!) and I need to find a better carrier. Either Geigo or Progressive is the one with really good rates in NY state (both a pretty good I hear) but one of them has really crappy service when you need them!
