That'd be cool. Kinda like a modern day AC Cobra, something I've always lusted after. Hafta go Google search on this topic now, you've got my curiousity piqued.
Another thought is to put a rotary in the Miata. If you went with a 13B twin turbo out of a 3rd gen RX-7, or a Renesis out of an RX-8, you'd have 250+ WHP. In a 1300 Lb car that'd be a recipe for insane acceleration and because they're lighter than a V8 you would less disturb the Miata's balance - one of it's better attributes.

there's a company called monster miata that sells a kit for expressly that purpose. also stacey david has a project on his ESPN2 tv show Gearz that is taking a small block ford V8 in a 92 (i think) miata.

Also, you won't find many Miatas stripped to below 2000lbs.

you got me excited just by mentioning a 3-rotor. If I had a RWD car, no doubt I'd go for a 3-rotor swap if I had the money. Yeah they waste gas like crazy and are very expensive and difficult to track down compared to the 13b, but the beautiful noise they make is worth every penny.
