the only thing you need to know
go to your local big box bookstore.
get 'The Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding Encyclopedia'
It's the only reference you'll ever need for body building.
I have it
I use it
I love it
I even found the history of bodybuilding chapters fascinating...
Check it out - you won't be disappointed.

A good training routine shouldn't last more than one hour, doing about 12-9 sets per bodypart. Check out the site I posted earlier, you will learn A LOT from those boards.

I agree it's a good read but nothing more, the training routines explained there are not as effective as the methods used today. For example, Arnold's routines used to last like 6 hours, it's a proven fact that training for more than 1 hour in most cases leads to overtraining and believe it or not, muscle loss. more isn't necesarily better.

One of those plans is for joe average that just wants to look good and not compete.. Guess what - the routines are about an hour, 3 sets of 9-12 reps per body part.. just like you said.

I have but one suggestion....do your homework....find a routine that is suited to you.....start it and stick with it.....don't expact changes overnight......it can actually take years for the final result....but believe me...it will pay off if you do, in every aspect of your life. ESPECIALLY when it comes to WOMEN! :{D

just one suggestion
here is a site, this is all you'll need
ABC BodyBuilding
this site is really good, if you look through its menus, it has almost every single excercise there, and most have pictures to explain how to do it, it also has other sections that are good for reading, stuff about too much working out, how to help damaged muscles etc.
the site helped me out
i'm 17 with 17 3/4 inch muscles, and I only been working out for about a year, and even then its not serious workouts, I miss allot of workouts and etc. hehe, but i do have over a 200lb bench press

All I say is that you should take it with a grain of salt, and it's not only the fact that he was competing, it was because a) that's how everyone trained back then, b) He was on roids and c) HE'S A FREAK! best bber in my book.

When it comes down to it.. whether that's how they did it back then or not - its all about lifting something heavy to improve your strength.. thats it.. curls are still curls.. presses are still presses..
Myself - i'll never touch roids.. i'll take my body to the max it'll naturally allow me, and keep myself there. I have no need, nor desire to get huge.
and you're goddam right.. anybody who's in his 50s and still looks like he could take you, me, and 5 other guys blindfolded, is fine by me...
Personally, I took elements from arny's book, as well as Body for Life by Bill Philips.. Basically, I use as many of arny's routines as I can with my limited amount of equipment, and BFLs methodology for diet, and I'm doing and feeling great.

Well my suggestion is to break up your week into seven days
imagine that!
hehe, then you start with your first day and you decide what muscles you want to work on that day. Then you pick what you will work on next day and then the third day you take a break and maybe do a bit of cardio (running, swimming, etc.)
Then you start over, but sometimes take an extra day for break because if you push your body too hard it will just shut down and you'll have no energy for the next few days and will feel like shhhh
Also, don't overlook your back. I think that's the most important part. People often work mostly on their chest, bi's and tri's, but you gotta work the most on your back. Do a lot of exercises that are like rowing and ask the people in the gym, they'll get you started
Another thing, don't rest too long in the gym. When you go in there, do a set, give it half a minute, do another one and drink tons of water, 'that cool refreshing drink'.
Oh also, make sure you always warm up and stretch properly!!! If you don't stretch you'll be like some of those STiff mo'fo's that just workout and can't even tie up their shoelaces. If you can, you should idealy stretch for about 15-20 mins.

Not trying to dis your site cuz this is a generalized comment being put into the context of bodybuilding, but I'd be more likely to listen to something arny tells me over something i read over the net... but i'm like that with any topic.. it's all about research.

Ill take Arnold or Dave Draper or Sergio Oliva over any of todays pros.
Oh, good thing you mentioned Bill Philips book, I would recomend it to anyone and it's a very complete guide for begginers.
