My question is, 5800 sq.ft. is considered an "average" sized house? In most parts of the US, even in the backwoods, 5800 sq.ft. is a mansion. I would bet there isn't 1 house in 1,000 that is that big in the U.S. You live in a nice community.

theives choose unprotected families and homes more than protected, a house and everything in it is an investment, you MUST protect that investment when everyone is gone. I advice you and your family to look into an alarm ... All of the houses that my family owns have alarms on them ...
sorry to hear this happened..

Now THAT'S a house!
Back on topic, the dust has settled, and the insurance company instructed us to begin re-purchasing the things we had taken, and just sending them the bill - I never liked half those DVD's anyway!

Hmmm......5800 sq ft on 2 acres? Around here, the house would go for probably just about a million, or a little more. And the taxes on 2 acres would probably be about $30,000 per year, significantly more for waterfront or canal.
Consider yourself blessed - not to have been robbed, of course, but to be able to live well.
Glad things are at least starting to get back to normal for you and your family. Ya' rich bastard....JUST KIDDING BRO!!!

I have to agree. 5800 sq ft is quite a large house in most areas of the US, even if it is average for your area.

The property tax isn't too much, as we live about 2 mins outside the city in a "municipality" or some ****... We get mad clean water through our own treatment plant, but we have to have septic tanks for sewage...
Because we don't pay the city for our taxes, etc. they're actually comparitively cheap...

The house we are buying has the perfect layout for making an apartment, and that will be the first order of business once we move in. I will take the security deposit money I get back from the apartment we live in now (almost $2000), and build a small kitchen in the area above the garage. It will then be a 1-bedroom apartment, full bath, kitchen/living room combo. It'll be reasonably sized - the bedroom will be quite big - suitable apartment for a single or couple.
I figure I can get anywhere between $1000-$1300/month for it (all utilities included). Damn - it's gonna be sweet to OWN my home, yet still pay about the same as I do in this one-bedroom we rent now . Will leave plenty of $$ left over for re-vamping the rest of the house, as well as making babies.

Sorry to hear about the robbery, Nick. Just remember most personal objects can be replaced, while lives cannot. Good thing you or a member of your family wasn't caught in the middle of it all.
