I bought a PS2 right when they came out and payed almost 500 bucks. Right away I started having trouble playing SOME DVD's. Eventually I was unable to make it all the way through ANY DVD's. It has ruined two games that I bought (NHL 2001, NHL 2002 with scratches in the exact same place on both cd's). Now I'm at the point where I'm lucky if a game will play AT ALL. I have better luck playing games on DVD than CD but I've always got my fingers crossed when I pop a game in (please work, please work, please work).
I feel jipped, $500 for a PS2 that will play hundreds of games (including psone) with a built in DVD player is definitaly worth it. But, what I've got is a piece of crap that isn't worth anything. Now $200 for the PS2 is a great price just for the games. I'd still recommend the PS2 over anything because I'm sure that my situation is a rare one. But, if I decide to replace my gaming console I will not buy another PS2. I have contacted SCEA about this issue NUMEROUS times and never received any sort of response, which to me is bad business.
Reason to choose PS2 over XBOX or GC:
Backwards compatability.....'nuff said.
Oh.....and GTA

Hard Call Man!
I was leaning toward PS2 till I spent a weekend with 11 buddies, lots of pizza, mountain dew, 3 Trinitrons, and 3 XBox's. HALO
I didn't get it either, till I played Halo all weekend, after that, I bought an XBox.
I like the Games, and there are some sweet games coming out for it soon.
I'd get the XBox. Great racing games: Project Gotham, Rally Sport Challege.

It sounds like you have your PS2 on its side (Vertical), they said you can do that for a short time, but if you have it for a long time (movies, gta3) then the disk will heat up and bend because of gravity, or get damaged. I'd just keep it Horizontal to be on the safe side

They do but be careful what you buy. I have seen some cheap ones that would actually scratch the lens. I bet Sony makes a kit and I would use theirs before I used anyone elses. At least you can blame Sony if it messes yours up more. And they do have big wallets.
