If you don't think a Protege is slow, try driving one after driving a Speed6. Perspective is everything! On the other hand, as has been pointed out the thing handles great. I have always had fun with all my Mazdas running away from people on the back roads (which are awesome where I live, despite a lot of my old favorites being neutered due to "progress"). Guy in a mid-80s Capri was trying to stay on my butt in the RX-7 one time, he was slowly losing ground until we went over a crested railroad crossing and I swear I saw air under his car. He gave up after that. Nowadays I have fun in the Speed with people trying to follow me turning a corner, I zoom through barely braking and when they try it things get hairy (for them). Sad thing is a lot of cars can handle more than their owners are comfortable with.

One of these years I'm going to give autocrossing a try, I have been meaning to the past two years but something else always comes up. I need to get in on those cheap Mazda parts for when I start restoring my RX.

hell yea ive been wanting to auto cross for years but i was either busy with school or some other thing. i cant wait to start autocrossing, thanks to jackelope ill hopefully at least start practicing in jan-feb. what gen is ur rx? i have a 1st gen with a turboed 13b and a stripped interior that i was hoping to get back in running condition but i started hooking my protege and decided to put it on the backburner for now until im content with the protege. plus i havent been driving for too long so im trying to build up my driving skills before i jump in rear wheel drive rotary beast.

pretty sure my Specialized commuter could beat my 1.6 protege off the line, say six to ten feet. my 1962 schwinn two-speed... probably even. against my v-rex (rans recumbent bicycle, not rx-7) definitely the protege wins.

i can still tow it faster than a bike. plus some new tires and a clutch and im pretty sure i will be able to murder any kind of bike... or focus. turboed 13b baby rotary power. plus im pretty sure the bababababababa of a rotary sound waaay better than when u put a card on the back wheel of ur bike

Off the line when I'm on my bike I am faster than most cars. They have to wait to get to peak torque, a human can just.. be there already :P

granted I doubt anyone was really trying to race me haha

I caught that....

if, if, if....

if i got a new clutch, if i got new tires....no "if's" here...don't underestimate that 2.3L duratec....It runs now, not IF i spend more money on it...

I'd be happy to pit it against your protege any day

well if your in spring hill thursday, why don't you come down and get my brothers car...he's in port richey...and i'm in in holiday, so i'm only about 20 mins from spring hill....

FYI...I don't have a regular Focus...I have a Focus ST....from what I've seen on a turbo II, you dont really have much on my Focus with that either...

Focus ST runs low 15's , same as a Turbo II RX-7
